overall volume adjustment. your preference?

How does your GNX and amp sound best: 1. by cranking the amp way up and adjusting overall volume at he GNX, or 2. by turning the GNX all the way up and adjusting overall volume mainly with the amp? or 3. doing medium settings on both amp and GNX and adjusting ______ for overall volume?

  • I put the GNX at close to 1/2 crank. I have also adjusted the preset patch to Lower Levels that sound good at stage levels. Lastly I adjust the Volume on the amp as needed to cut thru & hear myself on the platform at Church. This is usually about half Crank from the Amp as well :D
  • I turn the GNX up 3/4, then adjust the amp volume to suit :)
  • I run my GNX a 1/2 output, and adjust for volume downstream.
Or whatever gets the chix lookiin'.
  • Yep, most people are in agreement here. Personally, I don't like anything at extremes. Therefore, I run the GNX at at least 25% but no more than 75% and the same for the amp. Too low on either yields bad results, and too high, well, you just can't stand in the same room

As do I, mainly because my amp isnt tube, so it doenst matter. Its much easier to turn a dial at waist level than one thats awkward down on the floor.
  • thanks for replies so far. Here's my question in a better form:

If a tube amp sounds best cranked high, do you aim to crank it high and feed enough signal from the GNX to get the volume you want? I don't have a tube amp at the moment, but but I'm looking at one...

IMHO, tube amps seem to get the best clean sound between 1/3->2/3, and the best dirt sound between 1/2->3/4, with adequate pre-gain/drive to dirty up the sound.
In that particular situation, I'd adjust the tube amp for the perfect sound, than adjust drive (GNX level) to suit.
That said...it has been put forth MANY times here that putting a amp/cab modeler into another guitar amp is just a plain bad idea. Once you've \"modeled\" the sound you want, all you need is nice clean amplification; any kind of git'r amp is going to color the sound further, and you have to diddle everything to sound right together. If I were me, I'd save the $ for the pricey tube amp (unless you want to play straight into it) and put the bux into a nice pair of powered PA type speakers, or an amp and a coupla cabs.
Or whateer gets chix's attention. :D
  • From what I gather, most girls are keenly interested in the Atomic 112/50, and most guys become instant chick magnets just by virtue of playing through one.

Of secondary importance, that particular power amp lets the GNX unit function as preamp, and its components are designed for modeling, so your GNX cranks through simple tube goodness rather than unwanted coloration. that is the concept of the amp, and people report great satisfaction with it.

I'm on the waiting list for one of those amplifiers at the moment. And you can be sure I would be telling that to the girls if I weren't already married... Somehow it has a different effect on someone who shares your bank account with you.

Yeah, I bet it does. As long as she doesn't tell you when you can and can't buy strings.

That's a great setup, if you can use power stage only; don't forget tho, it's still an amp and speaker designed for git'r use. You'll find many posts here about using FullRange/Flat Response speakers, which will really bring out the best of your GNX.

That said, if it'd gather the groupies, I'd play through a Hello Kitty amp.

I run mine into a line mixer now instead of directly into my mackie DFX6 board. I did this at first to expand my mixer channels but this Nady line mixer is great for preamps. Very low output so you can crank your VX400, bp80, whatever up a bit instead of it being so hot you have to run it on 15%. I feel as though some of the effects do not ring as clear when the output is that low ...maybe just me. but anyway 3 cheers for line mixers they free up channels on your mixer and allow you to turn up your preamps output a bit if yer runnin a bit hot.
  • One thing no one has mentioned is their guitar volume. I like to keep my volume on the guitar up between 8 and ten. Then like others I adjust my amp model output levels to about 40 %, and have the overall output about half, then run the GNX to my effects return jack on my amp, then the siganl is run from a line out jack on the amp, through a direct box to our soundboard. This way I can adjust my master volume on my amp, which I use for a \"second\" monitor if I need to hear a little better, without interfering with our sound mix. My master volume is after the line out.

    peace
  • I run at lower volumes...but then I practice and pretend in my bedroom, or my Peterbilt cab.

One day...I'd really...really like to crank it and not kill birds.

  • whale watchers 'll love you !!
  • I never touch my guitar volume. Always at full.
