Req Ideas for Multi Guitar Case Stand

I am putting together a music room. Over the years, I have acquired about 11 guitars, all in cases. Instead of having the guitars sitting on the floor everywhere, I would like to built a stand to hold the guitars in their cases to both organize my mess and save room. I am just sending a shout out to anyone who has had a similiar challenge or to those who may have an idea of how you would build/organize your guitars.

Downsizing is not an option, life is too short anyway. Thanks for your ideas.

  • From wall hangers and other ways to do it. The one I liked a lot was a guy built a guitar storage area about 10 ft long but instead of building it off the floor he built it from the middle of the wall about 40\" off the floor. That left room for combo's cabinets and other things and it looked really nice. It was encased in glass and had the soft lighting. Pretty slick!

Some other designs I've seen are basic angled shelves with a back and sides if storing cases and guitars together.
  • Great idea. I was always thinking of going from the floor up, but now I can see the advantage of having the storage portion starting above the cabs. Even though my music room is bigger than I have ever had, I did not like thinking about all the 'dead' space above a guitar case storage unit. Building it off the floor to allow the cabs to fit underneath it is a great idea. I could make use of the almost the entire wall that way which would save me lots of floor space. Thanks for the feedback Guitar3456.

If anyone else has any ideas, please help. I plan on building the storage rack this week. Again, keep in mind that the guitars are going to be stored in the guitar cases, so the storage unit is being built to hold the cases. Thanks for any suggestions.
  • I have some shelving from Lowes (forgot the manufacturer) that works nicely. 48' long and 20(??)' deep 36\" high. Product is basically heavy-duty metal framework and particleboard shelving. this is not flimsy stuff.

Each unit can hold two guitars in cases, and you get room to open the case and lift the guitar right off the shelf without having to move the case.. you can stack the units and put a couple side by side to make a pretty good storage area with a pretty small footprint.

Another approach would be to get a couple of the shelving units and buy enough of the shelving to give you multiple 6-inch slots for multiple guitars underneath the top surface. You'd fit maybe 8 guitars underneath if you had 2 side-by side units. maybe 10. With this configuration You'd pull cases out to the top to get the guitar.

It has Good flexibility if you change your mind. It's pretty low-cost. Expandable for chronic GAS conditions, and useful for other things if you want to upgrade to something else someday.

The product is pretty plain looking, but can be dressed up nicely with carpeting on the shelf surfaces, some padding, and some accent lighting over each shelf.
  • More good suggestions. Thank you. I have been thinking alot about how to build this storage shelf. I really liked the idea of making it high enough off the ground so that the speaker cabs could fit underneath the storage shelf. The suggestion of the horizontal shelf also solves another problem I was thinking about.

My current idea(s) is to build the frame of the storage unit out of 2X4's. I plan on using wood because it can be stained to blend in with the knotty pine in the room. The back 2X4's would go straight up the wall about 8 feet. The front 2X4's would be slightly angled so the base of the unit would be wider than the top. That way, I hope, the stand will not fall forward since the weight of the guitars in thier cases would be on the top half. The shelf needs to be pretty much self standing because I do not want to have to screw it into the knotty pine wall. I am also thinking about tilting the shelf just a bit higher in the front than the back which would help the cases to naturally lean back towards the wall. The shelf will be 8 feet long as I currently have 14 guitars in cases to get up off the floor.

The suggestion of the horizontal shelf solved my problem of how to store my keyboards in their soft cases. I did not want to store them vertically. I think I can make just a simple shelf cart unit with the shelves spaced about 6 inches apart. Probably add some wheels on it to make it more portable. I would make it long enough to fit the guitar cases too in case I wanted to put some of them on this cart. The cart would fit under my bigger storage unit.

There, both a verticle and horizontal solution to my storage needs. Nothing left to do but buy the material and start building. Thanks for all your suggestions. It really helped me form up an idea of what I wanted and how to proceed. I told my brother-in-law about these ideas and he really thought they would work great in my music room. He was all excited about the plan as he has a few of his guitars and a cab at my place. Right now everything is layed out on the floor taking up massive space. This storage shelf and cart will maximize our floor and wall space.

    Again, thanks for your suggestions.
