More Vista Stuff

Still waiting on DigiTech to release their support for Vista... :(

But while we wait, here's a new page with Vista resources for Musicians...

  • I'm very intrigued by Vista, but not enough to switch to it quite yet. My DAW is important to me, and it works perfectly well with XP. So do you guys think that Cakewalk sold out to Microsoft (to a degree, in a sense), or is this truly a sign of vast improvements in the realm of Windows operating systems?
  • Let's make this a poll.
  • My brother-in-law 'upgraded' his computer to Vista. Nothing works. All his old programs crash the system or end in a blue screen. He has been very disappointed. He is now reformating his hard drive and reinstalling XP Pro. He spent, and will spend, alot of time rebuilding his system just to get back to where he was. I'm in no hurry to move to Vista. I am quite happy with my GNX4 and PTP running on my old Dell laptop. I will upgrade only after I hear that everything works with the GNX4 and PTP. Until then, I'm staying with what works for me. Take care.
  • I voted other. I don't think Cakewalk is selling out or is breaking new ground. I beleive they are making the only sane business decision they can. As a major PC software developer, they have to support Vista. The real telling thing is what is not on this Vista resources page. Think of all the music USB and midi devices out there that are not mentioned: USB keyboards, guitars, multi-effects systems, etc. Will drivers ever be developed for those? Sure for the products that are in the currect prodcut line of a manufacturer (GNX4, for example) its likely we'll see some support. But, for products that didn't quite make it, it is very doubtful we'll ever see a driver that will work with Vista. So, I think I'll be using Sonar 4, Reason 3 (notice that rewire is NOT supported in Vista), XP, my Boss GS-10, my Roland EXR-7 keyboard, and my GNX4 for at least another couple years.

    Option added.
  • Cluebomb: Vista will not support old hardware or proggys; that's the only way to get it to perform better. If ms keeps supporting legacy stuff, it will never be a decent OS. Sucks, but it's necessary in order to ensure a better OS for the future. As for apps not working, that is not MS' fault; developers have had overa year to get on board and the vista SDK has been around for quite some time.
  • Ramone...

    AWEsome.
I used MS o/s's for years, from WIN3.0 up to XP SP2. I managed to make them all \"work\", but when Vista came out I was so repulsed and so fed up that I now own two Intel Macs. I'll go back to WIN when they either get it right, or Bill Gates convinces Catherine Zeta-Jones that she should be married to someone within her own demographic. (ME.) :D
    Microsoft - BITE ME.
  • vista is crap ... but it wont be in about, 2 years, give or take

don't hold me on that ;)

    Ah, a fellow fan. :D
  • <div style="displaynone">fiogf49gjkf0d</div>Let the flames fly but I like Vista, but then I ran XP x64 for over a year and got along with it. I designed my DAW around Vista and Sonar 64 bit. So if Digitech evers produces a Vista 64 bit driver, I'd be happy to test to for them. On the other hand I waited over a year for a XP x64 driver and they could not seem to come up with one. To me Vista is just XP with a different face and tighter restrictions on hardware vendors to produce better drivers.

  • That's not entirely true. They moved a good deal of hardware handling to the kernel, including audio and video. This allows both for more stable performance - if done right - and content protection (effectively making S/PDIF and the like into legacy devices). They also added hard disk I/O priority states, which helps optimize operating system's background services to operate better with audio. In the long run, it will be a win. In the near term, there isn't a compelling reason to switch from XP unless you have corporate motivations.

There is a good deal of early adopters, and I applaud them - their sacrifice, however major, will eventually help improve the system. For their sake, I hope Digitech does something soon.

On a side note - no, I have not heard of any new developments in this regard.

Whoa... Iliace... thx for the compliment and vote of support!

Those of us who are early Vista adopters are not used to that kind of quality treament around here. I'm still bruised from the last time I said how much I like Vista. :-)
