floating bridge setup question

whats the rod after the locking nut that the strings go underneath before they go to the tuners called? what is its purpose? how high should it be set - anyone have some pics of the correct height?

i got my rgt back from the shop and am suddenly having a hell of a time tuning it, am wondering if its set too low?

  • That's the string retainer. There isn't an exact height but as long as it puts downward pressure on the locking nut is should be ok.
  • The shop mighta' jacked up your intonation; that would make it out of tune SOMEwhere on the neck all the time...
Also make sure they didn't alter the balance on the trem any. It has to be in balance against the tension of the strings so it's level. If they changed the strings, especially the wieght, that'd do it to.
Then again, it could just be bad karma for not hooking me up with the hottest woman you know who ISN'T your wife.
  • The string retainer wouldn't have anything to do with tuning as long as you have the locking nut tight. Really about the things it could be is that the claw is not adjusted properly (the base plate is not level with the body) or the intonation is not set properly. The Floyd Rose site has some good setup tips and possible solutions for tuning problems. If one is set up right, it should hardly ever come out of tune. Also, if you use the same brand and guage strings the intonation should be good for a long time. If you change guage or even brands of strings it will effect the setup because different brands of strings have different tensions I have two guitars with floyds on them and I set them up myself. At first it takes alot of patience but gets easier after you do it a couple of times. I also have a Peterson Strobostomp which is very accurate for intonation. But if you have any chromatic tuner, you can easily check the intonation. Instructions for that are also on the Floyd Rose Site. If you find that it is not right take it back to the shop that did the work in the first place.

    Lots of good tips there.

Not sure what your tuning problem is, but when I bought my JS1000, it was set up with the locking clamps oriented the wrong way, which rendered them ineffective.
Also, using Chapstick on the posts where the knife edges go keeps the bridge from sticking.
