Hammond Organ without Leslie Cabinet

I am putting together a big music room (after many years). A friend of mine asked if I wanted to have his Hammond organ in my music room. He says it works but does not have the Leslie Cabinet. I am tempted to say yes without thinking, but I been reading some articles on the Hammond organs that say you had to have the leslie speakers for these organs. I can't afford $1000+ for a leslie speaker. Does anybody know of alternatives to the leslie cabinets? If not, will a regular keyboard amp, which I have, work? Can I just jack the Hammond into my PA system? As much as I would like to have a Hammond in my music room, I guess I would not want an unusable organ taking up space in my room. I have various other keyboards by Yamaha and Casio that are fully GM capable which I know work. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

  • I know there are some Leslie simulator pedals available, somewhere. I'm not sure how the Hammond works, though. I assume there is some sort of jack, or you could install a jack where the wires went to the speakers, etc. etc. FWIW, I've recently been experimenting with the B4 soft synth, and its the most amazing Hammond sim I've heard.

  • Run your Hammond through the EX7 pedal, it has a GREAT leslie simulator on it. the keyboard player in my band uses it, and it rocks
  • Great suggestions on the pedals. I looked up the Digitech EX-7 pedal and noticed that the Leslie presets are called rotary for that pedal. That rang a bell. Preset #45 on the GNX4 is called ROTARY. Is that also a Leslie effect? If so, I wonder if the presets, since both are by Digitech, are essentially the same or at least similiar. It would be great if I could just use my GNX4 and run the Hammond through it for recording the Leslie \"ROTARY\" sound. We would not be using the Hammond live because it is too big, so it would only be used for recording. I am thinking I could jack the Hammond into the GNX4 line inputs, use the ROTARY preset, and set the line input to LINEFX to get the Leslie effect. Any thoughts on that? Thanks again for your suggestions.
  • Rotary on the GNX4 is similar, but not identical, but definitley usable with a hammond as you can assign it to the expression pedal for real control
  • I plan on giving it a try if my friend actually shows up with his Hammond. Great suggestions. Thanks.
