Yeah, well, the rest of her looks OK, right?...I'm not picky. Let he who has the flawless lover cast the first stone of ridicule!!!
Anyway, her husband is almost as old as Anna Nicole's was, and almost as rich...so she'll need comforting soon, right??

Meanwhile, back in my pitiful little reality...I'm diggin' the Tascam already. Ran it through some paces yesterday. And of course am trying to make space for it in my tight little \"studio\". I'll post my impressions and opinions of it as I use it some more.
Meanwhile, I'm in the middle of another \"Classic\" mangling, as I've been sick as a dog (enough so that I haven't even played in a week!), which is being done almost entirely on my GNX. One of these days, I'll actually write a song...
  • :D Congrats Shredd NEW STUFF REWLZ :!:
I love hardware recorders there so clean and they do what you want them to every time. Never careing what freekin resources you have available on your PC. 8)

    ExACTLY. Quality sound, functionality, etc...
I had a \"profound\" revelation yesterday. Here it it: A computer recording porgram can offer amazing features and so on 'cuz its running under a very complx operating system. But that same complex operating system has to run a whole computer, and a zillion other functions...ever open up your Task Manager and look at how many threads and processes are running? No WONDER a puter can't make a decent recording without being tweaked like Anna Nicole's prescription cocktail.
Meanwhile, a digicorder-type unit: it has it's own internal software, with a lone purpose, and assuming it's decently written, is very effective and purpose-oriented. No crashes, lockups, pops/noises/dropouts/latency. Just SOUND! :D
    PS: your new avatar ROOLS.
  • :D Thats why I decided on MFX units instead of lets say gearbox, and a ux2...software based amp modeling. they all want to suck your processor dry...then go ahead and fire up protools or whatever even in there plugin forms ...your left with no resorces to actually record with. at least on my old laptop.
Instead of getting the hardware recorder.I sold all the pc stuff and just have pedals...all the processing is done before it gets to my pc... so only 1 thing Protools is running on my pc when I start to record. CONGRATS again bud lets here some stuff as soon as the \"lerning curve\" is over...new gear there is \"some\" pain involved.
  • Ya know, I was running PTP on a pretty slick puter...P4, GB of RAM, XP Pro, yada. But it would still choke under PTP. I think it was partly resources - too much other stuff for the puter to run, besides PTP (even though I stripped down what was running to a minimum) and partly just inadequate/inappropriate hardware. I really think if you wanna do any kind of decent recording on a PC, you haveta have a powerful unit built especially for it. Unless you just happen to have a \"normal\" puter that handles it well, as lots of guys here seem to.
I'm also doing very little processing withing the recording; even my stylin' new 2488 has effects that can only be applied to one channel/track at a time. So I tend to do my processing first. I can always use the effects sends and returns to further process if I want - even using the GNX - but I'm just not that fussy...at least until I'm signed.
The only outboard processing I do (beyond what's built into the GNX and my Behringer mixer) is a BBE Sonic Maximizer, to clean up the sound and uncloud the muddies. Tho I've considered a nice chorus unit, so I can use the GNX's \"modulation\" section for some of the other stuff it does; I love chorus, so I have it on lots of patches...
Anyway, I've been foolin' about with the new Tascam, and it's pretty great. Once I've got this Tanzanian Death Virus licked, I'll get back to work on my latest \"mangling\" project (which I'm doing mostly on the GNX); then maybe try something new on the Tascam. More Tasha daydreams or something...unless I can get some OTHER sweetheart to spend some time with me and work up some new ideas! :D
Did I mention that your new avatar ROOLS ALL!?!
  • For all interested:
I've had the Tascam a few days now, and had a chance to fool around with it a bit. Here's my initial impressions:
First the bad - the only thing I've come up with yet to object to is the internal metronome...it's not volume-adjustable. It's occasionally inaudible over what you're playing. Bites - even my Fostex MR-8 had a volume adjust/on/off for it.
That said...it's been great so far. The sound is very good, the controls are a lot easier to figure out than it appears, and the general interface - while it appears stark and difficult, and implies lots of menu-surfing - is actually very user-friendly and not particularly difficult to navigate and use. I've barely cracked the manual yet.
It'd be nice to have every control and adjustment right on top with a knob, but then there'd be a thousand knobs and THAT'D be confusing! It's actually nice to keep what's in your face to the basics, especially since all the other functions are pretty readily accessible.
I haven't plowed into the deeper capabilities yet, and thus haven't experienced any learning-curve pain yet. But having cut my teeth on the Fostex MR-8, it all makes perfect sense to me and I think that it's going to be pretty easy to get used to and work with.
I LOVE having lots of tracks to work with, and there's six pairs of stereo tracks to use that allow you to put stereo signals from things like the GNX or my Roland right in. You an also link pairs of mono tracks/inputs for stereo recording. The panning, levels, etc are really easy to adjust. You can even adjust the effects you've added to the assigned track/channel after you've recorded it.
Another very cool thing is that when you're recording tracks on top of what's already there, they're playable while recording...for some reason, when I'd record or punch into my Fostex, the tracks you're working on were silent (until you were actually recording, with monitoring on). I didn't like that, since it made it difficult to lead in or out, etc. And you can mute or solo any number of tracks in order to listen to exactly what you need to, which the Fostex also didn't do.
I haven't had the chance to assess the mic preamps or the phantom power yet, or the mixdown/mastering functions...I'll get around to it.
Unless one of you rock-star types wanna come over and bring some good material for us to work on, and really test-run this thing. And don't forget to bring your wife's hott sister.
  • Manual, page 79. There is a Level control under the Internal Setup subheading, in the Metronome menu.

Thanks bud, I'll look it up. I needed to know how to do that!
By the way - is there anything about anything you DON'T know?!?
  • I just download the manual, then pretend like I know. 8)

Gratz on the new toy Shredd 8) . Looks very nice.

Ilia is just being modest... I think he actually DOES know everything about this stuff - ok, well at the very least 1000x more than me 8)

Actually  , I'm reading an interesting book on social interactions on Internet forums. Did you know that IRL I'm a robot that does not think or feel, but only programs itself to respond as necessary to specified parameters?

There  chew on that one.... NEXT!
