ok a pro tracks walkthrough please?

Every time I fire up pro tracks I get a no midi output warning.

So this is what I get when I click to choose output device:

But when I choose the MS device and click ok I get the same warning dialog... :/ It's a loop. I click choose again click ok then get warning again. So I click continue with no midi output device. Yet I see a little icon in my system tray showing midi activity.

My first hurdle is just starting the program w/o any errors or warnings!

My next step is to make a drum, bass and keyboard line that I can play along to.
I've been messing with this program off and on for months now and I can't even make one thing happen with it. Can someone do a walkthrough for me?
Set a key, time signature and create some events?

  • Hey 'hook - sorry I don't have a step by step for you, but when you get this, you have to see the GNX listed there, and choose it for your input & output.
All you've got there is the MS mapper that's in your sys. Make sure your GNX is installed and recongnized by your sys, including drivers. If it isn't, you either have to install them and choose, or uninstall everything and install them in the manner listed in the GNX's little software book. You have to follow those directions to the letter. But if you do, it should load up fine. It did for me...I have other problems. :?
  • ah so it only works with the GNX or some other specialized hardware then?
I can't solve the latency issue with the gnx so I just wanted to use it to make some tracks to play along with.
Will try it again with GNX hooked up and see what happens. Thanks Shredd
  • Installing the GNX4 software and PTP can be a pain. You have to go through the install step-by-step with the instructions in hand. There is no shortcut that I would recommend. It appears that you did not install the drivers correctly for the GNX4 midi interface, like Shredd said.

As far as learning PTP, once you have the program and drivers installed correctly, the tutorials in the PTP manual will get you up and running faster than any other way. I used the tutorials to learn the PTP program and highly recommend the tutorials for others just starting out on PTP. It will save you lots of time and frustration compared to the trial and error method. The tutorials are pretty well thought out and guide you through most of the features in a step-by-step approach.

PTP is a great little program. I have found that PTP does just about everything I need to do. Once you get the GNX4 and PTP up and running, you will be having lots of fun. My only problem is finding time to play with all my gear and recording music. Take care.
  • I hope you're talking about external tutorials because the help dox seem to me like they assume you already know how to use the software... I spent a couple hours a day for the first few weeks going through them and was completely lost. A very unusual thing considering I have taught myself Unreal Editor and Maya and several other programs with zero beginner friendliness...
I didn't have any problems installing drivers as far as I know. I use exedit with no problems.
  • Like gtaus said, you haveta follow the instructions exactly, then it usually works fine. And you have to have the GNX connected before you start PTP, or it thinks it isn't there...
BTW, if all you want to do is record trax to play along with, the GNX's 8-track on-board is pretty great, does loops...everything but tell you how great you sound. :?
  • Are you planning to use MIDI I/O? If you're just recording audio, all you need are your GNX audio drivers to be recognized. MIDI drivers should go hand-in-hand.

In your options/audio main page, find the driver mode. It should be WDM or ASIO. Make sure the mode on GNX matches - you should see it flash on the screen briefly when you turn on the unit.
