Yngwie Malmsteen signature strat

I'm thinking ahead for my christmas pressie this year.....
What do people think of this (given that I am an avid Yngwie fan and can - if i bothered learning it - play his material)?
8) looks sweet...

  • A friend of mine has one. I've played it, and it's a pretty nice guitar. It's definitely over priced.

I liked it so much, that I scalloped the neck of my Jap Strat. It has the exact same feel, but has hotter pickups. The Yngwie pickups are not hot at all. So, if you have the confidence that you can scallop the neck yourself (very easy), you can save yourself a ton of money
  • I used to own a 90`s Malmsteen signature...hated it *over priced*

I do however have a Mex strat that I scalloped, added Brass nut and YJm dimarzios too and to be honest just as happy if not moreso with it than the signature Model. I've been scalloping my own necks for 15 yrs. I love scallops.
  • Thanks for the replies.

Yeah I was thinking that it was pretty expensive...
Ednrg- so basically you sanded your neck down? I can do that I suppose!

Luredmaul - How do you scallop your necks?

Also, do you find it helps with legato/sweep picking/tapping? The bloke who wrote my guitar repair book says that it helps all aspects of playing, if used with light gauge strings. Mind you, i can play 16th notes at 220 bpm on a Epiphone SG with 10 -46s..
  • My findings:

    Sweeping: yes
    Tapping: no

On the higher frets, I simply put sandpaper around a dowel. On the lower frets, I used a dremel to remove the bulk of the wood, then used a sander to give it that nice roundness. If you're going to do it, make sure you tape your frets multiple times to protect them.

It's really not hard to do once you get over your fear.
  • I use sandpaper, my finger and lots of patience.
I find that I play cleaner(notes just sound more pure), sweeping is more distinct, bending can be done vertically (pressing inward for microtones) tapping is slightly easier. string will never jump out from under your fingers(was never a problem anyway) you can bend farther.

I like 9-42 but can play well with the 8-48 Yngwie set also.
Main set on other guitar is 10-46.

I'd Sell my Fender Standard Stratocaster, Fully Scalloped, Brass Nut,
Dimarzio HS3 bridge, YJM neck and Middle disconnected (but there) tone controls (just like Yngwie) setup with 9-42 tuned down to Eb in Blue Agave
for $400 plus shipping.( One scratch in the back, still don't know what I did) (just cuz I like projects n don't have any)
  • Well, I killed that thread
    hehe
  • No.. you didnt. I have gone over my limit for my internet and thus i am slowed down to 64k. A big difference from 3000k.

You realise I am in Aust.. Do you have any photos of your guitar?
    Thanks
  • Working on the picks...I suck at photography, wifes not in the mood yet ....lol

\"Winstons Idea of foreplay was ...Brase yourself Effy! - Mrs. Doughtfire.
  • Plus, foreplay adds 30 seconds to the minute.
  • LMAO forgot all about this.....was in POD XT Heaven/Hell for the last week.

    I'm on it!
  • Deeper scalops suck for ppl new to them, you'd be bending the thing all outta tune...long as your fingertips never touch wood, that's all you need :P

You buying? AC??? cuz If you want it Deeper I'll scallop it DEEPER!
  • After seeing the pictures, I think I scalloped mine deeper (maybe I didn't have to). I scalloped them somewhere in between yours and the real Malmsteen.

I have to disagree on the point of your finger not touching the wood. I have a guitar with jumbo frets and my fingers never touch the wood there. The (deeper) scalloped fretboard feels completely different.
  • I actually had a scalloped neck and liked it a lot. I think I used heavier gauged strings so I didn't notice much of the bending issue. Right now, I'm very happy with my tall frets.
What I'd like is for you to do a Buzz Feiten mod. I tried some sweetened tunings from the Peterson Strobosoft and am impressed at the improvement of tuning. With the BF, it's gotta sound much better. 8)

I actually have 4 scalloped guitars they all vary in depth, I have been playing scalloped necks forever.

The Malmsteen model also has 2 different depths to it too, medium & deep. I just chose shallow for this one, It's not set in stone and those are bad pics as I'm no photographer.
