New Music Wanted

I figured this would be a good place to come for new music suggestions.

Here's what I don't like:

1) Pop-style song structure, i.e. intro--verse--chorus--verse--chorus--interlude--

2) The new \"heavy punk\" (or whatever it's called) style that has a drummer bashing out 16ths on his two kick drums and a singer that's going \"RAAARAARARRRARAAARRAARAR.\" This style also seems to be rife with flashy guitar players and other band members who can't quite seem to come together as a band.

3) Singers who whine or in anyway resemble that guy from Creed.

4) Bassists who believe it's their job to play every note the guitar player is playing.

Here's what I do like:

1) Song structure that takes you on a journey--a song that changes throughout.

2) A bassist who partners with the drummer as frequently as with the guitarist.

3) Drummers who use the toms and who also explore a lot of different percussion sounds (outside of the standard kit).

4) An overall style that is somewhere between hard rock and heavy metal.

5) Guitar work that is fun to learn and play (I'm probably not going to tune down to freakin' Ab).

So, I think I've basically described Tool. I'm really looking for something that might be described as a thinking man's heavy band. Any suggestions? Have I just insulted everyone's taste?

Thanks in advance!

  • Jeez dood. You should be listening to RUSH. Or weren't you born yet?
  • Try some Kutless there my favorite band now 8)

They use song structures, but in a very sophisticated, individual manner.
Smart lyrics with vocals. Currently working in Queens of the Stone age.
Avantgardog is their \"White Album\" so far. Great guitar mixes throughout. I like to work in this area because it's got a classic rock vibe, without the excesses.
  • Right on guys, I'll give all of those a listen.

Shredd, I've been meaning to get into Rush for a few years now. And yes, they are a little outside of my generational scope, but that's alright. Any suggestions for a starter album?
  • Hey 8)
    How's it goin'?

    Here are my suggestions

    Dream Theater
    King Crimson
    Pain of salvation

    Starter albums:

King Crimson-In the Court of the Crimson King
Pain of Salvation- Entropia or Perfect Element pt.1
Dream Theater-Images and Words or Octavarium

For Rush start with Moving Pictures or Spirit of Radio:Greatest Hits

Yah, great band; has all those qualities you mentioned.
They've been through several 'style incarnations':
Early stuff - hard rock, zepp--ish influence. Fly By Night or Caress of Steel.
Middle: 2112 is a classic; but I'd go with Moving Pictures or Permanent Waves.
Later: Hold Your Fire is excellent, as is Power Windows.
Latest: Meh....partake at your own peril. Lot sof young'uns seem to liek Counterparts, and Vapor Trails ain't bad...
Enjoy, let us knowhow ya like it!
