My RP350 and Windows Vista experience...

This i guess is marginally off-topic for the Guitar Workstation forum, but people have discussed the RP pedals here before so I figured I'd post my experiences :D

I just purchased an HP Pavilion dv6000z laptop, AMD based, and it came with, joy of joys, Windows Vista home basic.. I immediately tried to setup the RP350 on it, which ended up being pretty much a failure :(

What did work:
The USB Audio drivers installed with no problems, and I can use the RP350 as a playback and recording device.

What didn't work:
Anything else at all.

The first thing I had to do was update the firmware from 1.0 to 1.1 so it would support XEdit. The updater would detect the RP350, but the instant you pressed 'update', Vista would immediately bluescreen and dump core, complaining of a crash in CEUSBAUDDRV or something along those lines. The display on the RP350 would show \"Update\" so obviously something made it through, but after power cycling the rp, the pedal still worked fine, with 1.0 firmware (I was afraid at first that I had bricked the pedal, but it looks like they thought of that!)

Anyway, I hooked the pedal up to an XP computer and put the new firmware on it, and hooked it back up to the Vista laptop.

The next thing to do was install XEdit, which also didn't work. Similar to other people's experience on here, it immediately barfs saying \"Operating system inadequate\" or something like that. So, I trawled the internet and found some tools to extract the files first from the installshield app, and then from the .MSI installer file, and had all the appropriate files to run XEdit.

So, when I tried to run XEdit, the splash screen would appear.... and then the system would blue screen and dump core, with exactly the same error message as when I tried to do firmware update.

So.. yeah, there's definitely some vista incompatibility at the moment :D The fact that the audio drivers work but the 'out of band' data part implies to me that it's probably not that significant a problem.

if any of the digitech people want any more detailed information, crash logs or whatever, please contact me and I'll be more than glad to help! :D

  • :( There is a fine line between being on the \"the cutting edge\" of technology and the \"bleeding edge\". I have Vista running on a Laptop for testing purposes but will not put it into service untill all my software is compatable...maybe by summer it should be worked out well enough for my studio switch. Ill have to use it with pro tools and my RP250 as well as Korg stuff so I have quite a wait I bet.
  • Digitech currently does not support Vista.
  • Well, I know Digitech doesn't support Vista yet, but I figured that people might be interested to know what happens and how far you can get.

With regards to 'cutting edge'ness, I needed the laptop now for university, and it's basically impossible to get a real-brand laptop without Vista on it now... :(

I remember when I worked for gateway around the Windows 2000 release...Talk about nothing working with the new OS.... Its just a common experiance and nessesary evil...If I bought a new system it would be Vista its just gonna take a few months for all the manufactures to catchup there drivers and such.
  • I currently don't support Vista either....

Seriously, though, I'm surprised XP apps don't just port over to Vista... I guess I'm an idealist... And maybe dumb...
  • the apps port, the drivers don't :(
  • I just picked up an RP250 and encountered the same issue. I was able to extract the Xedit files to a folder and run the program from there but it says \"No device found\". Even though the RP250 shows up in Vista's device manager, I still haven't been able to make it work (yet). Fortunately I am using a dual boot setup between xp and vista until more apps become available for vista.
  • Somebody please splain this to me  . I'm not asking this to be jerk - I'm asking because I really don't know, and would like to understand. MS has been talking about releasing Vista for what - 3 years now??? How is it that it seems it took so many manufacturers by surprise, and they don't have drivers ready. Do they all have to wait for the actual release and then scramble to develop drivers?

I largely agree with iliace in regard to this. As well, microsoft has made clear they don't expect large vista market penetration for 18-24 months after launch, which has the result of giving developers plenty of time to get proper vista drivers in place.

For companies like Digitech and other rather exclusive providers of software and/or drivers, I'm fairly forgiving. My beef is more at the video and sound card (gaming, not music models) drivers or lack thereof since Vista as being pumped as the \"Ultimate gaming\" experience right from launch day. My nvidia video card still has only beta drivers until at least the end of February. Anyway, that's another topic on another forum.

Which is why I encourage dual boots for the time being. Since I'm not always recording or playing games, I can run Vista 75% of the time and reboot to XP when necessary for the time being.
  • so i assume then that the gnx4 also will not work on vista. any ideas when there will be a fix? and what will the usual policy be - provide the fix for free to users?

in other words is there a risk now of buying new software and then having to shell out in the future for a vista version?
  • From what some users have been told, there is no timeframe for the fix. The problem also occurs with GNX4. Once it's available, I'd imagine it will be a free patch or driver/software update.
