GNX3K is malfunctioning ? switching patches by itself

I just played a gig and selected a patch between songs and the 3K changed back to the previous patch without any footswitch action ???
The week before, i created a patch with 2 accoustic amps and saved it as a warp and 2 days later i open the patch to tweak it and i find one of the accoustic amps is now switched to a fender twin ??
Also, when i save a warp patch with the silencer switched on, it freaks out (after i save it)(sounds fine when i'm previewing / creating the patch) and goes into a stuttering digital distortion !! UGLY !! and the only way to stop the problem is to save the patch without the silencer ??
I thought i better mention these glitches after i read a post by Martin Tele about his GNX 4 malfunctioning.
My GNX 3k has been totally reliable up until now (the last 2 - 3 weeks) and has not had any liquid spilled on it ??

Might just be a coincidence ? But with the freak sending us the P.M. notifications and the malfunctions of mine and Martin Tele .. My gut feeling instantly said \"HACKER\" ....

Is it possible to HACK through and screw with the GNX ?
Can anyone here confirm or deny this?

  • No, this is not possible. Unless you have MIDI cables hooked up, and someone else is sending you program changes through them.

Stuttering digital distortion is sometimes a sign of too high a threshold setting on the silencer.

Acoustic warp - are you sure you saved not just the warp, but the patch as well? You might have put another acoustic in channel 2 where a fender used to be and saved the warp - not the patch itself, which reverted back to fender as soon as you went to another one.

Just some thoughts... there are no hackers. The e-mail notifications seem to be a forum glitch, so we'll fix it. They're not third-party e-mails disguised as digitech e-mails.
  • I posted about this quite a while back. I was sitting in my room playing a particular patch, and my 3k was about 8 feet away from me. It changed to a different patch by itself. I got up and changed it back to the one I was playing orinally, and went back to sit down. A couple minutes later, it changed itself back to the same different patch. I turned the unit off and ran to the basement to hide :? . Haven't had the issue since. It seems for me that any time a computer chip is involved, strange things are bound to happen

 Maybe your 3K was trying to tell you something Rob  It liked that Tone better or something  Wierd
  • It's kind of strange; I've never had that happened (and trust my, my 3k is banged up worse than most). It might be a footswitch latching problem. How is the bank setup? Is it going to a particular patch within the same bank, or a program in a different bank? What mode are you in when this happens?
  • For my situation, I was (and always am) in stompbox mode. I was on patch 4, and twice it changed to patch 47. It only happened that one day.

And Partch, any time an inanimate object tries to tell me something, my standard operating procedure calls for me to run, hide and quiver in the basement  until the voices stop :?
  • Hi Iliace, Thanks for the reply.

I can't quite see why a hacker can't access the GNX via the USB connection whilst i'm using it online ? What's the difference between USB access and midi access ? (sorry to be so paranoid about it)(i've been hacked before, they're a miserable bunch)
When you say there are no hackers, do you mean the firmware on the GNX is solid state and unable to be tampered with ? That would set my suspicious mind at ease ?

I tried multiple settings with the silencer re:- threshold etc. Maybe i could re-create the distorting patch and email it to you, to demonstrate ?

And as for saving only the warp and not the patch ... When i save any patch or warped patch, I am only aware of one way to store the new patch?

    Click DEVICE-
    then STORE PRESET
    then SELECT LOCATION

    Am I missing something ?

Thanks again, I really appreciate your reply.[/quote]
  • Why not try to save your edited & warped preset to yuor computer? Then try loading that patch to the location you want & save it there on the GNX save scroll thru the name then location then save again. That's how I do it so then all my Live presets are also on a folder on my computer as well as the GNX. Just a thought?
  • There is no difference, but I would think you'd have to have a virus, or some other malicious client, for this to be exploited. If an external user can gain access to your USB drivers (I'm not that technical, so I don't know for sure but don't exclude the possibility) then yes, they can send patch change messages and SysEx messages via MIDI to tamper with the system. The latter can be destructive, but not extremely likely due to the fact that GNX SysEx is not publicly documented. Also consider the timing improbability, too - your GNX isn't hooked up 24/7 is it?

My e-mail is at the bottom of the post. You can also upload it here:

Others can then hear it too, here:

  • Thanks again for the replies and apologies again for the paranoia !

I just tried to re-create the stuttering distortion and couldn't get any result at all ..... like a car, when you take it to the mechanic and complain about a rattle in the diff !

I'll have to pack my paranoia away for another season ! Sorry if I spooked anyone... must just be a 'pre-gig panic' type glitch which fades away after the money changes hands ???

P.S. Shredd ! I heard Liz now has a rattle in her diff after you serviced her ?? :P :P
  • People get paranoid sometimes, I'm just trying to help!

Is it still switching patches? Have you talked to tech support?
  • Well it only switched patches once during the gig and apart from trying to re-create the distorting stutter last night, I haven't used it for any performance or rehearsal since the gig on sunday... so i'll keep you posted. I'll give the tech support some feedback if it happens again.
From memory, (I use bank mode) it switched from 46 to 63 ??? Maybe a glitch with the bounce back feature ?

I emailed you the patch that was distorting a few days back, it should have the Jumbo accoustic on the left and the dread accoustic on the right (i can't remember which is red and green)(i'm at work now) and it should be saved as a warp. (which also worked fine last night)

Please let me know if it has changed ?

    Thanks again.
  • I'll take a look as soon as I get a chance.
