Pickup poll piece height?

I have an Ibanez RGT320Q with Dimarzio IBZ pups. Im considering changing them, but I want to try playing with the poll pieces first. How far should they be from the strings? And is it just an Allen key adjustment?

or --- is it better to adjust the whole pup?

I'm sure there are technical answers and measurements that can be followed, but I've always trusted my ears. First off, set the entire PU to a height that is acceptable. Not too close to the strings or your tone will suffer. Get a relatively Loud clean sound on your amp. Pick each string and see which ones fall short presence-wise. Those that do, can be raised until they are balanced well with the others. This procedure has always worked for me. If the pole pieces are not Allens or flatheads, then they are fixed. In that case, any adjustments must be made by moving the whole pickup HTH
