Rhythm/Lead Instruction Books or DVD

I want to learn how to play the rhythm/lead guitar part like you would hear in a power trio, where the guitarist hits the chord and adds a few tasty licks before moving on to the next chord. Although I have been playing guitar for many years, at this technique I would consider myself a beginner. I am looking for some instructional method that would take me from beginner, thru intermediate, and maybe leave some room for advanced studies.

Two methods I have been considering are Fretboard Logic book/DVD package and the other is Rock Discipline DVD by John Petrucci. If you have any advice to offer on either of these products, or something else, let me know. Thanks in advance.

  • Fretboard Logic will teach you how to play.
Petrucci's vid will make you want to quit. Actually, Petrucci's is more geared to exercises to make you a better player with the assumption that you already know your theory.
FL will give you your foundation. Petrucci will make you more proficient with it. 8)
  • I bought this DVD lesson from Doug Doppler. He is a former student of Joe Satriani.
Doug communicates with you through email. I kid you not! He considers you a student.
I got lots of extra help from Doug this way.
    Guitar 411 Here
at the site...click on samples...video clips...and you can see portions of the DVD.
    Also look at his website.
    DougDoppler Here

P.S. Insideout...if you are looking...Doug uses in his video Ibanez S540's
and has a rare one with the Maple neck and maple fretboard.
  • Rock discpline is more lead oriented but for me it worked wonders!!
BTW you dont need a lot of theory for RD
  • save yourself $40 and Yahoo a search for \"chord melody\".

Understanding theory and practicing is what will do that for you. There is no magical method that will open up that road for you.

Oh wait... there is... Fretboard Logic

Seriously though, you will be able to apply understanding of what \"tasty licks\" fit after which chords, and when it is appropriate to play them, with practice. Also, your imagination and creativity will allow you to pull those out on the spot.
  • Get some RUSH song books. And yes those ARE the chords he is playing lol
Lifeson makes the guitar sound so big. Listen to Hemispheres imo his best work.
If you want to learn coordination and left/right hand independence then it's Petrucci all the way (my spell checker suggested fettuccine for Petrucci lol)
I just got Petrucci's lesson two weeks ago and I am recommending it to anyone who wants to work on technique as opposed to theory though he does cover some strategy for writing/composition.
I voted Petrucci, but to be fair, I have not seen this Fretboard Logic package you mention.
John Scofield has a good OLD video on Modes. Not sure if it's on DVD but you never know. He plays the modes for you which imo really helps because you know beforehand what mode he's going to use, and you get the benefit of knowing for sure as opposed to listening to a tune and trying to guess what mode is being used, or by just knowing what mode a guitarist or genre favors.
  • I'm just thinking that gtaus says he's a beginner. The Petrucci dvd is pretty useful, but what good are good speed skills if you don't know where to go on the fretboard? JMHO.
  • memorize fret positions. that makes thing easier. Theory can get intense. The JP video will work for your chop building R L hand exercises. Stay away from videos from Yngwie who seems to just laugh at you (as in Good Luck Noob) .. here it is fast.. here it is slow.. NEXT.

Will Landrum has some excellent vids for various skills.

Lifeson- be nice to have a training vid from him.
  • As a Newb self taught myself. I have a long way to go just can't log the hours I need to get good fast. Realy there is no way to get good fast it takes time experience trial error etc.. But I must agree with many here on Fretboard Logic It will make the light go on in many ways I had the SE book & had made it almost thru it working at my own pace very good book!! I just got the Box set for Christmas it has a DVD as well as Book 3 which I was going to get anyhow so the Box set Fretboard Logic is my sugestion you will not be disapointed if you truly want to know & learn guitar related theory in a simple fairly easy to understand formatt
  • Well you guys have talked me into picking up fretboard logic.
  • Speed certainly takes time, thats for sure.
  • As far as books go...

I'm old school...I've still got this one..
It's not tabbed..You'll have to be able to read music to put it to use..
Great book though.. and an invaluable reference. Requires some dicipline to get through it, which i finally have, but don't have everything nailed..Just soooo much...

  • Now for DVD's.....
    I've watched several...
This is the best I have found.

Don't let the title fool you..This is not just a jazz DVD, but a guitar instructional DVD that is just unbelievable..You'll have to have a little knowledge of the guitar, but this DVD is geared at rock and blues players, and showing them the intricacies available on the fret board for , yes, jazz, but applicable to many other styles as well..

You don't need to read tab or notes..Just watch...And if your like me, watch, and watch, and watch..2 hrs in lenght..And for $20 I guarantee you wont go wrong..

  • Thanks to all who responded. I got ahold of Fretboard Logic SE book from one friend, and Rock Dicipline from another. To me, it appears that the Rock Dicipline is geared more towards improving your speed and techinque. Fretboard Logic seems more geared toward learning the fretboard. I am more interested in learning the fretboard and the theory so I can play more music. Most of what I play is not all that fast anyway. So I guess I am leaning towards the Fretboard Logic method. I hope to have enough points on my Amazon.com Visa card shortly to get a $25 coupon which I will use when I get the complete Fretboard Logic Package like Partch talked about.

I really appreciated all the other comments too. Especially the suggestion to search for chord melody on the internet. Which I did. There are some good sites out there. And anytime I can get something free I am interested.

Again, thanks to all who responded.
  • Another option if you perfer written and visual materials is The Plane Truth book/dvd.

    http://www.thatllteachyou.com/

It covers a lot of ground and the guy who sells it runs a forum http://www.guitarforbeginners.com/ which he is very interactive with.
  • Here's an option: Netflix has a variety of instructional DVDs for guitar. You can rent and use, or maybe preview for purchase. they had a Neil Peart drum instruction video for my son...phenominal. There's no time limit I'm aware of for keeping netflix videos. You just swap it out when you're done. --Marty
  • I just bought the guitar grimoire dvd and that guy's voice is so damn annoying I want to break it... He takes on this evil overlord persona with a hood and a cloak and some really cheesy \"special\" effects lol

He does all demonstrations on a PIANO KEYBOARD... wtf... lol Total waste of money imo... It's more important to see the intervallic relations on a fretboard than it is to see things the \"easy\" way by using a keyboard.

Maybe if I get back to the store early tomorrow morning they'll let me swap it for fretboard logic or the MI fretboard workbook... I heard so many good things about the guitar grimoire books I was surprised at being so disappointed with the dvd.

BTW Don Mock has a good treatment of dominant seventh fusion ideas in Blues From Rock to Jazz, but unfortunately his Jazz Rhythm Chops DVD falls short in that the ideas he puts out are not diagrammed as he tackles each subject. He gives you some chord charts at the beginning and that's all you get. It's literally impossible to tell which voicings he's using as he goes through progressions even if you pause it for each chord. Pretty annoying :/

In addition to the Blues Fusion dvd I got another winner today with the \"Guitar Chord Encyclopedia\" dvd published by Proline Publications. 13 bucks. Distributed through Hal Leonard item number HL00320562
Maybe would have been more convenient in HTML format than DVD video, but still a valuable reference.
  • Whatever you do, dont get the Malmsteen DVD. If you want to feel inadequate and depressed, go for it by all means, but otherwise, if you actually want to learn something, go for the others.
