How would you drum this?

http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=1675910802

This is a riff from a high string skipping thing I used to do way back in 83. After this section I have an Am interlude which is VERY Spanish sounding. But I feel sort of stuck atm w/o being able to come up with anything good for the drum line. Any ideas from anyone? Will probably wind up doing it a bit faster I think.

  • I'd leave it without a drum line until you get a verse or two out, then come in with a kick, kick, snare, kick, kick, snare beat with some choked cymbals at first. Lots of potential to go in different directions here. Odd times will make it a completely different song, or you could take this into the prog rock direction. 8)
I have no doubt that you'll get a different opinion from everyone who replies. That's the cool thing about music.
  • It's funny even though I learned speed/thrash from a drummer, I don't really think in drums. I gotta find some guys in my neighborhood with a garage =)

That really is the cool thing about music... There really is something for everyone so it only makes sense to do your own thing.
  • I suspected that you were thinking about going the speed route. The reason that I would have avoided it is because you're doing a lot of picking, so I wouldn't want the notes to compete with a whole lot of other stuff going on. Then again, a lot of that may have to do with me being currently sick of mixing and mastering tunes.
I'd really like to hear where you go with this tune. 8)
  • Thank you ACWild. I will hopefully return with an update soon. The Spanish sounding part is a trip to hear after the heavy riffing, but even that is heavy. Dm, Am, F, E, F/7? (a Petrucci/Lifeson'ish chord I suppose) ,E with some pedal tones in between chords.
  • Not a clue about drums there Meathook?? let me say though I dig the Riff & Arpegios 8) Sounded great :D What Ibanez is that you have? I play a JS1000 & Started playing 4 years ago on an RG470. Ibanez Rule IMOP 8)
  • Thank you partch :!:
Yeah Ibanez owns. Mine is an S520EX. Although I'm leaning towards getting a JS1000/1200 myself. BUT THEY DON\"T COME IN BLACK!!!! :D I've owned three Ibanez's in my time, and they've all been my favorite guitars. Two previous were RG's. I can't seem to get good relief on the neck with this one though unfortunately. It stays too flat up above the fifteenth fret so the action has to be set too high for my tastes. Which is a real bummer because I really like the feel of this guitar otherwise.
  • The JS1000 comes in Black Pearl. Cool finish. 8) There, now you can buy one.
  • Yeah but it's not BLACK! Although I have to admit, they didn't actually have one when I went down to buy last time. I'll have to have a closer look because I didn't like the color the rep said it would be almost identical to when he showed it on another guitar. I could always have it painted :)

Theirs should be in by now I'll have to go down and look this weekend.
  • The JS1000 looks pretty black to me. What you have to know is that it doesn't have a DiMarzio Joe pickup at the bridge like the 1200 has. I think it comes equipped with a PAF.
    Either way, I'm a die-hard strat fanatic, so :P

AC is right Meathook this thing is something to behold in your hands!! 8) Don't trust pics I seen some good ones of it but when mine showed up & I opened the case I just kind of looked at it for a while with mouth hanging open just stunning in person :D No if you like & want Black you would not be disapointed with the looks of this thing & as far as Tone & Playability man you just got to play it to believe it
  • OK OK OK!!! I'll probably get one now and I can totally justify it by blaming it on you guys haha ;)
Oh and the message I just got from Billy Sheehan at Myspace!!! BILLY SHEEHAN!!! I'm gonna play all night now. I'm so jazzed I literally have a buzz...
I'm not going to just make a half assed stab at music this time around. I'm highly committed to making something happen. Teaching was great back when I was playing before, but the time off, and the age that's come with it have really helped me to focus. Teaching was really rewarding though and once I get my technique back up to speed and feel comfortable with my skill level, I'll definitely do that again too. But I want to start serious local play. Bar band, thrash band, coffee house classical I don't care as long as I don't have to punch a clock anymore lol
I just started playing again a month or so ago after a ten year lay off. I didn't realize how much I missed it. I practice harder now than I ever did, and I have more confidence too which is a great feeling.
I lost some cartilage in my left elbow, and tore the skin of the whole top tip of my left ring finger from the first knuckle a few years ago in an accident, and I don't even feel like that has slowed me down. The finger healed very well and everyone said it would be mangled looking forever. I was horrified when I saw my finger lol Even though I wasn't playing at the time that was my first thought of course. Oh no, what about guitar??? lol I guess you never really lose it. Nothin but bone sticking out of the top meh
I guess I haven't mastered macro mode yet... hehe

If you want to buy gear and blame others, go to www.gearpedia.net. Beware! It's severely gas-inciting.
I remember seeing Billy Sheehan with Steve Vai on the David Lee Roth tour. Those guys were so good it was insane! 8)
  • That's a great start to a killer song. I want to steal it!!!! A lot of great posibilities with that.

When you finish it post it again, I love that kind of stuff.
  • \"I opened the case I just kind of looked at it for a while with mouth hanging open just stunning in person\"

I know the feeling, Me and my Dad were like that when our USA strat in SONIC BLUE arrived.

    Great moment

    Meathook,

I say get out there and play man, you obviously have some chops to so go for it 8)
