I have a MacBook Pro that I use to record in a variety of places. I've done a fair amount of recording in Garageband, and have been pretty happy with the results. I've recorded drum and bass tracks for rehearsing, full songs, acoustic pieces with multiple layers of guitar, etc.

As to the quality, a guy I know just spent $3000 recording a demo CD in a local studio, and the tonal quality of his CD doesn't compare to the Garageband stuff I've been doing. In my opinion, the guy who mixed his CD overdid it, and everything sounds compressed and dead; no sparkle at all. I've heard the guy play live, and I know that the ability is there.

I have the iControl control panel from M-Audio - I highly recommend it, it allows Garageband to be controlled using a console of sorts. For the final mixing stage on multiple tracks it is far easier to make small adjustments quickly using the iControl.

That being said, here's the full disclosure: a clean recording is not hard to get. An acceptable demo isn't that hard to get. A great mix is VERY hard to get. I have a book on mixing music, and it's helped with general eq settings for instruments and voice. But nothing replaces someone who has an ear for getting the best out of a track. I know what I want to hear, but it takes quite a while to get there. I don't think that's the platform or software, though; just my own ignorance.

  • How many tracks can u record and mix together in garage band?

I like the new i-life software for mac...Garage band gets about 450 sound effects and loops...some are pretty good especially the background amdient sounds

The most I've had is eight, with only the drums being midi loops; everything else (keys, bass, acoustic and electric guitar) I recorded into Garageband. I actually like the midi drum loops; I'll start with one and then modify it according to need.

If you can afford it, Amplitube allows you to record a dry guitar line and then add effects to your heart's delight after the fact.
  • hi guys - haveya missed me???
Still dealing with intermittent inet access and job pressures. And no, my boss's wife hasn't killed me yet.
Had to put in my nickels' worth here...
I had so much trouble with PTP and the PC it was on that I decided to pick up a MacBook and see if it behaved any better.
The BIAS Deck 3.5SE loaded up in a heartbeat and involved almost no configuring whatsoever, no drivers or any of that crap.
The bad news it - even tho the program was much easier to install and set up than PTP, it freezes solid every time I start it, so I can't use it. Ugh. Computers for recording is just a bad idea. Gimme a nice Fostex/BOSS/Tascam digicorder any day.
Any of you guys bumped into Jennfer Aniston lately? Is she asking about me?!?

Just curious - did you try Garageband? Between Garageband and Logic Express I've got all that I need for recording.
  • I bumped into Jen the other day... we made out... I asked her about you... she said, \"Shredd?? Shredd who?

That heartless wench. Lucky for you, she's just getting back at me for not calling her every day like I used to...

Anyway - I have tried GarageBand...I liked it, but of course it does't have some of the features or versatility of something like BIAS. I like being able to add effects after the fact, configured to my liking. I like really goo d mixing capabilities.
BUT....considering I haven't been able to get any kind of decent performance out of either PTP or BIAS, GarageBand is looking pretty great....
What is \"Logic Express\", what duz it do and where do I get it???

    http://www.apple.com/logicexpress/

It's the reduced version of Logic; similar to ProTools, but without the requirement of hardware to run the software. I usually record in Garageband, and then mix, etc. in Logic.

Thanks for the link...went and had a look at it. Very comprehansive. They do recommend an external HD for better sound quality tho. But I'll probably stick with Garageband and my GNX & Fostex...LogicEx looks awesome, but at $299, I'd be more likely to keep saving for a 16-trk, or perhaps buy one of Jennifer Aniston's nightgowns on ebay.
