Pickups

I'm going to buy a Epiphone LP Standard and upgrade the pickups, anyone recomend any pickups that would sound great? I was originally going to get some EMG's but decided they would look out of place and a cherry burst guitar.

  • If you play Metal............. Dimarzio X2n/Super 2 w/nickel covers

If you play Hard Rock .....Dimarzio Super Distortion/Super 2 w/nickel covers ( think 70`s/80`s Les Paul Rock)

Other than that...you could put original Gibson buckers in it
  • That is a broad stroke question.
    Here are some good choices.
    some Gibson pickups :P

My personal favorite on a Les Paul are the Burstbuckers.
The Alnico's are hard to top...period....especially on an SG.

On a LP...your not going to fail with
    490R ....neck
    498T ....bridge(hot leads)
  • If its metal get a seymour duncan dimebucker or \"less metal\" version of that which is the invader.

IMO opinion MEGS would look very cool on your LP
  • I put a pair of EMG's (81/85 combo) in my Epi LP Custom Alpine White model a few months ago. The black pickups against the pristine white paint, front/back bindings, and accented by the gold hardware that comes on the customs....Absolutely stunning.

Sounds phenominal too. I play mostly hard rock and metal.
  • I have a EPI LP Standard, and I put in Gibson PAFs. There is nothing like that classic sound.

You may also want to change the entire wiring.....and the switch. That's what I did. It now sounds EXACTLY like my Gibson LP Standard
  • I like the Dimarzio PAF Pro for the bridge position and the Breed for the neck position. This combination gives me a wide range of tones from metal/blues/jazz/ and everything in between.
  • I am using a set of PRS Dragon II in my Epiphone Les Paul. They Scream. Also you can have push pull knobs installed and get the great single coil sound just like on a PRS Guitar. I like it because I can go from Dual Humbucker to Single coil with the pull of a knob. Plus they look just like factory Gibson pickups. As far as metal sound I am sure a set of EMG 81's would be hotter but I can get great pinched Harmonics with the PRS pickups. Just my 2 cents.
  • Yea I believe it just matters what kind of music you are into playing. IMHO I would go with the EMG's, just because I think they kick major ass and have so much punch and gain. But I don't use any pickups that aren't active, except for Dimarzio's in this one axe I got. So I would go with one of those two companies for pickups and you can't go wrong!
