I'm a star not a sideman now?

Hey all you older board members.

I sang a demo for a for my singer so he would know how the song went. But everyone said I should keep it. It's a raw retrto sounding early rock attempt. 3 piece live band One pass on guitar, bass and vocals... complete with mistakes. I have never sung anything in public. I don't even sing at home. I can't stand the sound of my voice. Now I hear that most singers don't like their voices.

Now I have been elevated from picker that can't sing, to picker that doesn't want to sing. I feel like a star. lol

It's called \"Sweet Nothin\"

  • Make sure you get lots more money, and some perks. Having an attitude problem will also be expected.
Don't forget the rest of us!! :D
  • One of my alltime favorite band jokes:

Q: How many lead singers does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
A: One. He just holds it, and the world revolves around him.
    Sorry ODB!!!

  • Thank you, thank you,

I was really afraid to hear my voice even in an empty room for years. I wouldn't even hum or sing to myself as soon as I heard the first reflection off a wall.

    I have always respected the opinions of musicians, because that is where music happens. NOT in the vocals. Tony Bennet was on a show last night and was asked what he considered was the greatest advice of his longivity. {80 years old and still touring and making the talk show circuit.}
Tony said his voice coach said quit trying to be a Sinatra. Listen to the musicians, and do what they do. They're the ones who understand what is going on. He said he took that advice and it has kept him busy his whole career.

I agree. \"We\" singers do have HUGE EGOS!! Oh my GOD!! How easily was it for me to say \"we\" and \"singers\" in the same sentence? Pretty damned scarry!! That's why I am reverting back to a sideman. I don't want to have to buy newer BIGGER hats.
  • My first 3 gigs, I didn't sing, in fact i was afraid to play in front of them so I kept my back to the crowd through most of the show....lol Man, was I nervous. after a few shows I started singing along in the background, no mic...then the soundman put a mic up one night, he said he could hear me singing through the overheads the night beofre and wanted to add me in.

I was horrified!!!! NO WAY JOSE!!

As we all know, soundmen don't listen....ha-ha!!! so he did it anyway and next thing you know, I am the backup singer. It kept snowballing like that until I fronted my own band. I hated the sound of my voice but have since got used to it and worked with it. It just takes time...that's all.

Keep working on your vocals....and one day someone will call *you* a singer.
  • I go to karaoke with some co-workers, and naturally get drunk and start singing. Whenever I'm doing it, I'm always thinking \"man that sounds horrible!\" But more often than not, I get standing ovations. Go figure...

    Gee...I wonder why? lol

naw, I'm just kidding around. I bet you sound great.

People tend to sing better when they are relaxed and confident regardless of vocal experience.

Well, what baffles me is that there are many 23-ish year old female model types that don't get nearly the response, even if they don't sound half-bad.

I for fact know that I can't hit all the notes (e.g. Aerosmith) and can't sustain a vibrato without wavering... many times I've had so many beers and cigarettes that my voice cracks and sounds scratchy... but overall people still think it's pretty good.

As such, my advice to anyone is, sing your heart out and hope for the best. Don't think about it too much.

    Bob Dylan...Tom Petty...mick Jagger...David lee roth...joe cocker...Lou Reid...Hendrix...clapton
The list goes on and on in rock and roll
These guys do not have technicaly great voices...BUT THEY GOT ATTITUDE and confedence and it comes from the heart...therfore they are great rock-n-roll singers in my book. Its all in your head...ok unless the beer bottles dont stop getting thrown your way...then you might want to turn off your personal wind machine, take the aqunet out of your hair, trade in your lepard skin spandex and matching fur boots and reconcider your LD singer job   :lol:
