Cable S/PDIF from the GNX3 to the FireWire Audio Interface

I just bought the Behringer FCA202 F-Control FireWire Audio Interface (it's basically an mbox) and it has two 1/4\" jack inputs for line in, left is mono and both would be stereo I take it. What kind of cord do I need to go from the GNX3's S/PDIF to the 1/4\" jack(s) on the Behringer FCA202 F-Control FireWire Audio Interface, remember they are NOT RCA jacks on the Behringer FCA202 F-Control FireWire Audio Interface but are 1/4\" jacks.

If you can give me a link to the cord(s) that would be awesome because I don't have a clue.

Or would I be better off running the left and right output from the GNX3 into the Behringer FCA202 F-Control FireWire Audio Interface? It seems like it may be more noisy that way instead of S/PDIF?

Please let me know what the cord would be for mono and stereo please and if it's better to run from S/PDIF or Right & Left output from GNX3.

Thanks in advance!

  • The FCA202 does not have a digital input. Use analog outputs.
  • Do you mean use the left and right output on the GNX3 into the line in on the audio interface?
  • Are you sure that it isn't digital? I figued it being firewire that it was digital. Man am I pissed off about this purchase if it isn't digital. These marketing people are so sneaky!

Looks like I will have to sell it and get an mbox because I need as less noise as possible going into my recordings unless anyone knows of a way to get less noise from the L/R outputs from the GNX3.

    Thanks.
  • The specs say nothing about spdif. It must not support it.
  • Thank you guys. There's so many options and when you look at a bunch of these things (audio interfaces) you forget something sometimes like I did.

Anything I ever try to get into is never easy. It's alway s a big pain in the ass at first.
  • You need to understand what's happening.

In the end, it's digital. However, the signal coming in is analog. What the interface does is convert analog audio (via the 1-4 inputs) to digital (via Firewire). Thus, you will plug in the analog 1/4\" outputs on your GNX into the analog 1/4\" inputs on your interface. FYI: in my experience, there is no such thing as a digital 1/4\" cable.

Some interfaces allow you to take a digital signal and send it directly to the Firewire (or USB), without the analog-to-digital conversion. The FCA202 is not one of them. So, you won't be using the S/PDIF output with it, just the analog 1/4\" outputs.

It seems to me like you first need to decide what you want to do (at the maximum) and how you want to go about it, before buying anything else. I would suggest you start here: http://www.guitarworkstation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3423

With the Mbox you'll get much kooler software to work with too ...Pro tools, Ableton light , Reason, amplitube Tracks EQ Dude its the bomb you cant go wrong...can you tell Im a PTMBOX fan ...they have a new mini mbox for 279.00 at MF.
  • As far as Firewire audio goes, Firepod is a more cost-effective solution than an M-Box. It leaves you plenty of room to expand, and doesn't cost that much more for the additional features. I never thought Mbox was a worthwhile investment, although I've heard good things as to its quality and reliability. The Firepod does have a Coax S/PDIF in/out, that can be used alongside 8 more channels - you really can't beat that kind of versatility, especially as a GNX3 user. The Mbox (and Mbox2) do offer S/PDIF coax I/O as well.
