Black Magic Woman

Hey fellas,

Heres a little jam I just put together, it's not perfect and may be a little trebly.

Been very busy lately so I haven't been able to contribute as much as I would of liked.

Hope you like it.

Cheers 8)

I love Carlos. Sound was a bit on the treble side, but becuase you were not trying to play Carlos version, I thought it worked very well. Nice job

  • Cool jam dude, Black Magic Woman is my favorite Carlo's tune
  • Pretty kewl, and a good jam on a very challenging tune!!!
  • Great job. I would like the guitars louder in the mix, especially since there are no vocals. And I agree with you that a touch of mid and/or bass would give the guitar more depth. But turn up the gain on your guitar work, IMHO.

What I would like to know is if you used an audio backing track, midi files, or whatever, for the other instruments to put this song together. I am still learning how to do this stuff, and am looking for ways to improve my recordings. When I hear good tracks like you just offered, I wonder how you made it.

Also, our lead guitarist the other day told me he wanted to play a Santana song. We both thought, of course, \"Black Magic Woman.\" Having said that, most of the time we play it's just me on rhythm and him on the lead. So a quality backing track, if that is what you used, would get us up and running in no time. It sure would beat practicing to just the drum machine.
  • Hey thanks all for your comments :D

    Gtaus:

I used a backing track from guitarbt.com, just added guitars.

The reason I didn't want to use an overdriven tone is because I mainly use distorted tones, so I felt like doing something different. :)

BT's are the best way to practice IMO 8)
  • I Loved it Slash 8) I'm glad you left it clean!! I think it sounds fine clear & bright :D Not to trebely for my taste. Overall great job & post I enjoyed this one!! It's always cool to see you doing so many different things from heavy to clean 8)

    God Bless Slash!!

  • Can we please not overlook that Black Magic Woman was written by Peter Greene? Sure Carlos et al did a great job on their rendition, but let's give credit where it's due, m'kay?

That said, nice job, SNB99! I'd like to think your mix choices were aimed at melding the best aspects of the original version with Santana's modifications :^)

  • Hey Partch good buddy, thanks for listening glad you liked it 8)

Rawfish, thanks m8. I actually never heard the Peter Green version, but I'm gonna check it out 8)
  • +1 to rawfish. Peter Green wrote Black Magic Woman, and was an original member of Fleetwood Mac, back in the 60's when they were a rock and blues band. Unfortunately Mr. Green met Mr. Acid, took a trip and only partially returned, if at all.

By the way enjoyed Slash-n-Burn's playing over the track.
One more payment to go on my GNX-3, come on Christmas.

  • rawfish, Good point on giving Peter Green his due. Still, when I think of \"Black Magic Woman\" I think of Santana, not Peter Green. And when I think of \"Blue Suede Shoes\" I think of Elvis, not Carl Perkins. It's like that. Let's hope that the original songwriters are getting credit via $$$ from those who made their songs more famous.
