Jonny Lang and Monte Montgomery, what a weekend!
I went to concerts this weekend, and I am humbled. Friday night I saw Jonny Lang as the opening act for Steve Miller. Jonny has been playing out making money with music since he was 15. He's now 26. In 11 years, he has reached a level of mastery that I can only hope to approach in my best moments. He was a pleasure to watch. He also played a few songs with Steve Miller, and the back and forth between them was great. Steve, of course, has been around for ever. He still puts on a great show, basically opens with hits, then goes into this great blues set, which you can tell is what he really wants to do, then ends with more hits. It's a great night, and if you get a chance to see him, you should go. I had free tickets, but they were only $10 lawn seats.
Saturday night though, exceeded all expectations. I had heard of Monte Montgomery, but had not seem him. His playing reminds me of Doyle Dykes, but he uses a number of pick and fingers techniques. He flies across the fingerboard, and gets sounds out of his Alvarez acoustic that are just magical. I don't know how much he plays out of Texas, but you can find him on the web. I can't see him being extremely commercially viable due to the length of his pieces. But, I believe, he is definitely one artist that is better experienced live. I know I'll be back.
