Afternoon Bop... (By Tal)

This one turned out to be a strange little tune. Started playing with half, whole tone scales in parts and my Roland GR20 synth..

This is more of a modern day be bop piece. Used the Strat and the L5 on this one. L5 is the straight guitar you hear. Strat is doing the synth parts.

(BeBop is a jazz form based more on harmonic structures than melodic)
(More info here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bebop )

Pretty cool effects chaining the GNX and the Roland guitar synth together. Got straight sax sound using the sax synth and the late nite setting on the GNX. 8)

The overdriven sound was obtained running the synth through the GNX in the Chorus setting.

Kind of strange, with the dynamics, and style changes going on, but I think it's kind of cool. 8) ..

Yeah.... I finally unleashed some effects.... .
I hardly ever use them but they just seemed to fit this piece pretty well.. .

Hope you guys dig it...I'll warn you though...It aint your typical Tal tune...:lol::lol:

  • Hey Tal,
That was cool!! It deffinetly had a fun feel to it all the way thru. I think the Sax realy had cool effect on this one. Those parts were you had the overdriven sound Man that Strat just squealed I liked that effect to those parts of this song as well. And the L5 just doing it's thing all the way thru very nice!! Cool post Tal!! You always come up with great post's!! I hope I can post soon?? I still get that CGI error evertime I try?? Iliace was checking things out but has not got back with final answer. I've been trying over & over again to upload my new song Lord Bring Down Revival.

    Hey God Bless you Tal!!
    Partch
  • Like always .....Kick A$$ !!!
  • Hey Tal,

This was great, that freakin synth toy you have sounds awesome

Sounded like this could be used on a movie soundtrack for one of those cult classics. 8)
  • Whoe! Let me get out my very worn sweatshirt, my shades, cup of espresso, and bongo drum. I am feeling very groovy man.
  • Thanks guys...Been dying to put something together with the synth..
    Really dig it.. 8)

Strat....You got to have the beret as well as the shades...

    Thank guys...

    See Ya,
    Tal.. 8)
  • Very creative use of the synth and a very clear mix. If I keep listening to your tunes, I'll be a sunglass wearing, cigar smokin', Maker's Mark sippin' cool dude. 8) Great job buddy!
  • :D Crazy Kool man dig it  I bet that brittle distorted patch you used had every dog in the nearborhood howling
I liked that tune alot ...nice jam and a great way to think outside the box.
  • You must be having a blast with that Roland Synth…I would never come out of my room if I had one of those synths…tracking sounds pretty quick…are you finding any big problems with the tracking? I can see it now, Hi Hon, Do you want to make a deal? You know that new bathroom you wanted…I think we can do it soon…oh, and you know that new synth I wanted…Damn!! :):)
  • I gotta agree that synth is cool and this tune rocks---still smiling :)
I bet you get lost for hours with that roland , the L5 and your gnx.
You know tal -your style is sweet---I could never play like you and I totally enjoy the tunes you post

    keep rockin bro
    the tooth
  • phantastic sounds :) 8) . Loved the outter-space distorted guitar really much :). The tune is still playing while I write this with a smile :D. PSYCHADELICA RULES 8)
  • Uber-trippy Tal. You sure do come up with some gnarly sounds, not to mention some pretty great compositions. I think you have more fun playing than anyone here! 8)
  • I started to listen to this on my ol crappy work computer speaker. Now that I have listened to it on a decent sound set up all I can say is now that was really different. Not bad mind you but a little different. Ya never know what Tal Rules is going to throw down.

Started out with a bunch of beatnicks setting around in a bohemian coffee shop, shakin their heads, sayin digin the sax, man. 8)

Then we are sort of blown out of the coffee shop into a mosh pit  with screaming guitars yelling out us for a few moments, and then back to the coffee shop again. Interesting contrast.

From wikipedia \"The capacity to improvise over a complex sequence of altered chords using only the implied scales requires a mental agility of a mathematical, problem-solving kind that is another hallmark of bebop.\"

Tal Rules, did you go down to South Texas, and find some of those mushrooms similar to what Willie had on his bus?

thanks for posting that little trip I did enjoy it
  • Thank you gentlemen!!!!

AC....You forgot the beret and the black turtleneck...:lol::lol:

0DB..Yeah I had a lot of fun with this one. My son who's a budding musician in his own right, still asks \"Why did you screw it up with the distorted guitars..\"...:lol::lol:

Kirk...I'm having a blast with the GR20.. Tracking is really fast.. A lot of the tracking quickness depends on the synth you selected and what your attack and delay settings are, as well as the string sensitivity set up.
Example: Full string section doesn't track as fast as single violin synth. You want those lucious full string sound from the string section...

WOG...Appreciate the comments and the L5 is just gorgeous. I still play the ES175 as my main axe when practicing. Just bring the L5 out on recordings and on the rare occasions when I have the house to myself on the weekends so I can plug into my Jazz Chorus. Such a cool guitar, I hate to put undue wear on it. I've had my ES175 for about a year and 1/2 and I'm already starting to see some pretty significant fret wear. So I just save the L5 from the every day rigors of constant practice, and just bring it out for special occasions. Like recordings for you guys.. 8)

    The Good Dr. FONK!!
Happy to hear from you again buddy. Glad you dug it, and am eagerly awaiting some new music from the mothership.. Thanks buddy. 8) ..

    Shredd...
I do have a lot of fun playing and composing. You nailed it buddy. If it aint fun I aint doing it...:lol::lol:

    Mike B...
    How's it going my friend???
Yeah this piece was kind of different. A pretty good way from \"Rockport Mississippi Rag\"...:lol: But it was one of those things that just kind or crawled in my head and wouldn't let go until I did something with it.
Did just order a Hipshot B Bender and Stealth Slide for my Tele and am looking forward to getting those cool Pedal Steel sounds from my Tele, like Will Ray of the Hellecasters. Now if I could only play about 1/10 as good as Will Ray, I'd have it made...:lol::lol:

Thanks guys for your kind comments. Haven't been around much due to business travel and it was a real blast to come back and read these kind words. 8) 8) 8) ..

    Thanks
    Tal.. 8)
  • Yeah!!! Love the sax sound!! really fits in this smokey late night jazzclubsound!! I have to agree on the other effects used, I don´t think they really go with the feeling of the song.
Don´t u have a Miles Davis(trumpet) kinda effect in that roland?
Think that would sound really nice!!

Further I have to say great job!!!

    really like the song

    Thanks.. 8) .
But I dug the synth atonal screaming guitar stuff..
    That's why I put it in there.. :) .

After I get through bopping the listener, and waking him out of the mellow groove, over the head with the half/Whole Tone diminished runs, ascending chromatically at the 3:18 mark, my favorite part of the whole piece is those 2 seconds at 3:35 until 3:37, where I put in the effect of a user trying to dial in a radio channel, and then finally finding the right frequency, at 3:38. 8)
I get a chuckle every time I hear that atonal, diminished run, culminating in the hunting for the channel effect..:lol::lol:

Like I said... Man.... I'm just having fun...:lol::lol:
