When would YOU sell a guitar???

OK gang, here's the drill. I'm trying to sell one of my extra geeters. (here's the ebay link; it didn't reach reserve, so I still have it: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=002&item=120025521051&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEUS%3AIT&rd=1)
So. What I wanna know is things like: Anybody have any idea what an ax like this worth (and I don't mean to you purists out there - 'flood and TAL!!!). And when is the best time to put up for sale. Ideas, ideas please!

  • Hey, shredd, I don't you don't want to hear from me, but here's what I look at when I look at something like this: What are the component parts worth, and could I/would I use them? Decent solid wood no-name body $40. No name, but strat fittable neck $35 and up. pickups - anywhere from $20 to $50 ea. Strat pickguard, min $10. Floyd rose unit - not for me, but probably worth about $35. I'd have to get a hard tail to replace it. Decent pots, switch, min $10. So, all in all, I think your $175 was in line. Strat, project, Fender all good terms for the title. Frankenstrat possible. You want the auction to end either on Saturday or Sunday afternoon to evening, or or weeknights, 10PM Eastern 7PM Pacific. That gives the whole US a good chance on being in on the end of the auction. Also, don't be afraid to ship worldwide. It greatly increases your chance of getting a good offer. To be safe with non-US bidders, I insist on Paypal. I charge US postage global priority rate, plus $20 for shipping. That covers the box, tape, and the crap of filling out customs forms. Also, I limit my shipping to Europe, Americas, and Japan. With a removable neck guitar, Australia is OK, just take the neck off to ship. Shipping rule for out of the US are here:

    Good luck!
  • Your guitar is much nicer than some of the other guitars being offered in that catagory.
Run your ad again. But get out of that LOW RENT neighborhood.

I realize you are not looking so much for eBay strategy, and maybe want to be reassured your price is right. I think your location is what is killing you most. So many guitars in that location going for under $200 and plenty under $100. Put this guitar over in the Fender catagory...you'll get a better price.
Phil has good advice on the value of this type of guitar.

I would drop the reserve and the buy it now. Save money on your ad. Low starting price stimulates auction bidding. You write a good ad, and I can see you have been an eBayer quite awhile.

.... :? wait a tad bit. After Phil lays awake at night, thinking about this sweet guitar...he may buy it. ...if he can beat the rest of us to it first. :P
  • Thanks guys...I've taken your advice, and relisted it tonite, since it's Staurday evening.

Wish me luck...maybe someone who lives somewhere git'rs are hard to get will like this one. Or maybe 'flood will decide his million dollar collection isn't done and will beat my door down for this one.
  • As a person who has purchased items from the US, whatever you do when you are shipping internationally, use a postage service that can be tracked, arrives on time and is insured.
Most important of all for international trading, communication is they key. Personally i feel better if the seller tells me everything, even if they write a 1000 word essay each day, rather than tell me half the story or none at all.

I like that guitar..... if i had more cash on me at the moment i'd consider it....mind you if i had more cash i'd be considering a lot more things

Thanks for the tips 'hoot...it's good to have that perspective. Dubya may think the world revolves around the USA, but not all of us do!
I do intend to have the package fully insured and trackable, no matter where it goes. I think that's important when you've spent a decent amount of dough on something, and it's damagable at that. And I always keep in touch abou the item and shipment.
As far as money goes...we all wish we had some to spare. If i did, I'd be Down Under checking out the Aussie cuties with their natural beauty and devastating accents. Are they exportable? :P
  • I'm sure you could lure a few over.... but why not stay here? The whether's warm, the sky is blue on an average for 6.7 days a week....

Thought about it real hard once...didn't do it 'cuz I wouldn't have been allowed to have a job. Or has that changed?
  • Oh dear i just realised i spelt \"weather\" as \"whether\". How embarrasing.

Yeah you have to apply for a working visa. Once you have that though you can work.
  • I'd sell my guitar if my debts got woefully out of hand...
  • I'd sell it on a trade-up, but it would definitely have to be a confirmed trade-up and not one based on hearsay.
  • I sell when I am trading up, and usually after I've already bought the replacement. I have one on eBay now, my Brian Moore 8.13. I just bought a Brian Moore C55, and since I've become a GNX4 user, I find that I use my Roland guitar gear less and less. In case any of you all are interested, here's the link for my sale:

And hey Shredd, I am watching yours!
  • I'm basically selling this one 'cuz I\"ve already \"upgraded\" to my Jackson; the FatStrat is a fine ax and plays great, but I prefer my Jax. So it's \"extra\". I just don't want to give it away, it's worth a lot more than a typical copy, 'cuz it's been built so well...
  • Well...the ax sold, but for a measly $102. Ugh. I'd run it before, and gotten similar bids, but put a reserve in 'cuz I thought it was worth more, and didn't sell it. This time it was in with no reserve or B/I/N, and in the Fender category. And I still only got one bill for it, and I've paid ebay fees about 3 or 4 times. Oh wel...
  • I know how it feels....
I was selling my Grannies antique sewing machine, and it reached nearly $400 - which surprised myself and my Grandmother. However the high bidder claimed that they had entered the wrong amount ... :x
The second sale - it sold for only $70. ON ebay Australia we dont have the reserve for some reason, only BIN and an auction with a starting bid.
  • eBay can be a real mixed bag. I've been on it a long time, done really well, and now I have a disgruntled buyer who has raised so much hell that ebay is threatening to suspend my account - nearly 10 years old. I'm sure if they put me in a room with this guy for ten minutes we'd have the whole thing worked out. But then I'd be in prison. :?

Buy It Now was \"settled\" in the USA a while back but maybe Australian law or patent restricts the reserve. Buy It Now accounted for 1/3 of eBay's revenue back around 2003 from another link.

  • My Brian Moore ended up going for $615, which, realistically, is about what I had into it. I was fortunate earlier this year, to buy a Chinese Brian Moore, that just didn't seem to have the right amount of punch when I used the midi. The fortunate part was that it sold for $200 more than I paid for it, so I was able to turn around and get the Korean one with the proceeds from the Chinese one. Still, I am kind of a USA snob when it comes to my guitars, so when I saw a US Brian Moore for $900, I couldn't resist, although the new one doesn't have the midi options. But, since I've been using the GNX4, I don't rely on the midi as much as I used to, so all is well.

Shredd - it sux that you only got $100 out of yours. Sometimes it seems that you do better by tearing them up and selling them piece by piece, but I know we hate to do that.

Exactly. I didn't have the heart, it's too nicely built. The guy got the deal of the year; I got boned. :?

Come again Shreddy...you mean with the guitar transaction?

    Peace,
    Dobb.

No...the guy in ? is fussing about RAM that isn't compatible, doesn't work, and is claiming I sold it to him dead. But it was bought new, and I suspect he damaged it either handling it, or more likely installing it in incompatible system/s.
So he's raised a mega-fuss over it, filing complaints and so on; I won't refund his $ on principle. So ebay is reviewing the case, and one possible outcome is that they'll suspend my account...I think they could also refund his $ by charging my credit card.
So I may have to sell all my git'rs at the pawn shop and trade it in for a Dan Akroyd special, and go after the guy... :?
  • I can't believe how cheap guitars go for. I just bought a SX Tele with a couple of after maket pups that sound killer at Music go round for 45 bucks  its ugly yellow and a cheap knockoff but its alder with a very straight maple neck thats got some pretty nice action too. it looks brand new exept for a chip on the back Brand new it goes for 130 or somthin rediculous like that...how do they do it...plays as well as any epi or squire  go figure now its my shop guitar I can leave the gibson in the case until I really need it ...plus I was missin my fender twang and have been jonesen for the uglyest guitar evr made a Telecaster they sound so sweet.I want a real Tele but this will do while I wait and save up. I think you can get a standard for 400 bills from MF  ...wish I woulda known your strat was going for cheap. I woulda bid too :)
  • You'd have dug it, it was as nice as a copy gets. But I think the general rule is that any copy, or even \"off brand\" type guitar (meaning not Gibson, Fender, PRS, etc) is gonna go WAY cheaper. There's a lot of crappy ones out there, but a few gems to be had. And if all you want is a playable beater - or the ugliest git'r ever - you can really score. Way ta go!
