ManglingTheClassics#2

Yep...sorry guys, another mangling for you to listen to! Without a woman, I need my \"Power-Chord Therapy\".
This is a (very) loose interpretation of a great party song by a killer bar band I useta go see. I did this stripped-down \"cover\" all on my GNX4, in about an hour, mostly out of frustration that I can't seem to get comfy with my PTP and make better recordings, especially drum tracks.
And, as usual, recordings borne of frustration usually suck...this is one I sort of rolled my eyes at. It reveals everything I'm doing wrong - awful acoustics in the room I play in, sloppy use of effects on the vocals, and a mangy singing voice that's an octave lower than the rest of the singing world.
Thanks for listening! Feel free to comment/critique - as long as you're gentle, don't remind me that I don't get lei'd cuz I solo so poorly, and take comfort in knowing that I PROMISE to make better recordings in the future - especially if I can find a babe. At least when I get back to writing originals...

  • Shredd,
I think your to hard on yourself!! I think like you said you did a good job capturing what this tune is: a fun party song. It had a good feel to it!! Hey maybee your not a front man?? Hey niether am I!! I love to sing though and it comes from my heart!! I think your vocals were cool!! with backups & all cooooool!! hey I'm not going to comment on the mix man. I can't hardly get a track layed down in an hour your putting a cover together. i think like I said already-You are alot more talented than you give yourself credit for!! It's good to be humble man I understand that completely!! My whole walk with God is dependant on that because I blow it all the time it's truly only by grace!! As far as the pole you needing a woman?? It's obvious you have the desire for a mate!! I'm praying God will bring you one. What you need to find is a good godly one with character & gentle spirit hey realy fine helps but: far more important what's on the inside!! Beauty is fleeting charm deceptive but a woman that fears the Lord Now that's what you need. Not to preach to you bro but just my 2 cents.

    God Bless You Shredd!!
    Partch
  • Dude, the greatest thing about hearing your recordings is that it always sounds like you're having a great time! Fun stuff! You must be a blast at parties. 8)

Well, yeah, I really do have a blast with my music toyroom...if I didn't have to deal with things like employment and social interaction and reality, I'm sure I'd never come out of there, except to buy more stuff to satisfy my G/A/S.
I totally dig playing and recording and all...I'd love to be a better singer, a better soloist, a better keyboard player...all of which comes in time, with practice and mileage. But even if I suck (in relative terms), it's still fun and there's little else I'd rather do, other than making the finals with my hockey team or tongue-bathing Marisa Miller.
Can't say what kinda fun I'd be at a party...haven't been to one in two years, and all I did was slobber over the women, who ignored me. :(

Ah, the chicks dig foreplay. 8)

If only. Around here, foreplay is when she asks you how much money you have. (This town is squarely divided into zillionaires and ski/bike/climbing bums, with a pitifully small amount of \"normal\" people in between...)
PS hey partch, thanks for listening....I spose I am hard on myself, but I'm a true amateur and if I don't expect better I never will be. And Jennifer Aniston won't EVER return my phone calls.
But really, I thank you for your kind comments...and yes, you are completely on about a mate. Much as I long for her to take the form of Elizabeth Hurley or Marisa Miller, what I really hope for is a kind, warm women who is patient and sincere and loves me for real.
And if she looks like Elisha Cuthbert, that's ok too! :D
  • Cool tune.

I wish I could sing half as good you.

Unlike me you probably don't need a band, so you could get a gig anywhere.

    Cool tune.

Thanks bud...it's a great tune, I really shoulda done an actual cover and made it sound good - I even left out a bridge part, just bein' lazy - but I threw this together in a fit of frustration over my inablilty to master - or even operate - my PTP. I'l get it down...
As far as my singing goes - you're way too kind. Fran Drescher laughs when I sing. But I'm tyring to improve, particularly in the way I mic/record my voice...and it'd help to sing songs that're in my range. But I appreciate the props anyway.
I'm really interested in creating a \"solo\" show...using backing tracks, loops, prerecorded bass/drums/rythm, stuff like that. It'd be really fun, I wouldn't have to deal with temperamental bandmates, and maybe I'd find me a hott little groupie that'd help me clean my frets out and polish my neck.
I got inspired to get back into playing for real by a guy I met a coupla years back...he's just a kid, but he's really serious - he's got 3 CD's out and in his live act (solo) he makes extensive use of loops. Does it all on a nice Ovation acoustic. It's awesome. And his albums, while more \"songwriter\" oriented, are also excellent. GREAT voice. Hott girlfriend, who he'll probably end up marrying. (he's 24, and they've been together 7 years!!! ).
Anyway, if you wanna check him out, it's: www.briangranse.net (he moved to Denver and now calls himself \"American Nobody\". Or you can continue to listen to me bleat and howl.
  • Good job.Time and practice with PTP will bring it all together, something I'm running out of these days  That and being stuck in a rut for the last 3mths.
I sure love that mic your using. One small peice of addvice, ease off the reverb abit, unless your going to apply it to the whole tune for that live room feel.

    Keep Rock'in P.G. :)
  • I think maybe your vocal need MORE EFFECTS!

Not really. Playing was fine. Cool Shredd.

Thanx 'shadow - I totally overdid the reverb/delay thing on the vocals...something I wouldn't have done if I was recording this tune more carefully. OR I coulda recorded it dry in PTP, and fiddles w/the effects after the fact before mixing the final. Oh well...ya know how it is when you've got hordes of adoring groupies insisting on attention, you tend to rush through your work.
My new mic has really gotten me interested in doing vocals, pitiful as my voice is. It's that MXL990 that MF has for under $100. WAY better than the doorstops I was using! I've never owned a decent condenser mic, so I'm having to learn how to use it and record my voice for best sound. Some sound dampening in my music room wouldn't hurt either...but since I'm going to be living under a bridge with my gear in storage soon, I'm not really pursuing it. :?
Stuck in a rut, eh? Whattya need to get jazzed again?
  • I think maybe your vocal need MORE EFFECTS!
Not really. Playing was fine. Cool Shredd.
 yeah, I deserve some of that - it's not like Stipe and Plant are concerned about their legacies being threatened-
Anyway, glad you liked the tune. I promise all you guys I'll be a little more thorough with my recording process next time, even if I just use my GNX/Fostex. One of these times I'll figure out how to use PTP and make some real recordings. And learn how to record my voice so I sound like those guys...
  • It seems like the MXL 990 is one of the most popular mics here. I like using it for my acoustic. For vocals, sometimes I have to use the Beta58 because the 990 is way too sensitive. I was recording in my basement and I could hear my wife bitching about how much of a useless ass I am while she was upstairs. She had no idea that the mic is that sensitive. :?

That's just rich. DId you play it back for her, so she could take credit for \"backing voices\"? 8)
  • I busted her. She acted like nothing was wrong until I quoted her word for word. Bwahahahaha! I never hit the record button because of the racket upstairs.

Ah, romance. I can't wait...
  • A fun tune for sure.man you sing great. It sucks that ptp doesn't work well on your puter.__It must be your puter--I was sure you'd have some success this time. Oh well

good tune and I'm glad that you are able to post
    keep rockin shred

  • HA HA! AC, thats too funny.

Just giving Shredd a glimpse of what he's missing out on.
  • aw of averages will insure your success....(\"do this grasshopper, and two months from now you will thank me\")
Cobalt my dear boy - bite me.
I'd address your rant as a real post, but I'm anti-flame, as is most everyone here. I'm glad your efforts serve you so well, and you have to fight chix off with a club. I'm also terribly sorry you have no sense of humor whatsoever. I'm SURE there's plenty of other like you who don't find humor in my gag, but for gawd's sake...IT'S A JOKE. Lighten up.
  • Hey Shredd, here's a pic Cobalt did of himself.

If he's fending off women with that head, you've really got no excuse.
I find your pathetic ramblings hilarious. I think Cobalt's post was done in humor too, imo. Both of you crack me up!
Your obsession with nookie is admirable. 8)

Come on down and jam bud! 8)
  • Yeah, you guys both live in jersey...you could jam and post your stuff. if ODB can do stuff like that via internet, you guys should be able to rawk out primo!
Thankfully, I don't live close enough to either of you to risk jamming with you - either one of you would make me look like a back street boy wannabe. Unless I was lead singing, in which case I'd look like Gilbert Godfried fronting the Lame Street Boyz.
  • Cobalt's a real musician though. 8) I just do this as a hobby.

Hey man, you're a gigging musician! I've got tons of respect for that. My wife and I are already making plans to watch you guys. 8)
  • You guys keep putting these keyboards in your tunes. I love it. Makes me want to pull mine out and give it a try. Fun tune
