New GNX4 User - Something I through together, heavy-chuggy

Do most of you guys use the drum machine that comes with the GNX or do you use a stand alone drum machine?

The one problem I am having is editing and getting more complex or custom drums put into the recordings. Any suggestions around that would be great. I wouldn't mind some feedback on this song below.

  • twessels,
Welcome!! Very nice post!! catchey tune there I liked it!! I use the loops cause I'm new to all of this. I'm not a drummer, I can bairly play guitar & sing a little. As far as using the sequencer in Pro Tracks to get original custome stuff I can't seem to do very well with that. My hopes would be to use multiple loops to get a non canned kind of feel just position them were they need to be & get it all sinked up & hopefully be able to get something that sounds less repetive & mechanical!! Iknow there are lots of tools out there that others may be able to sugest for drums?? Anyhow great first post man!! Cool stuff!! Keep them comming!!

    God Bless!!

  • Hello twessels,

I am new to the GNX community having acquired a GNX4 for my birthday a week ago. I find the drums in the GNX4 to be good for practicing and jammin, but like you, I wanted more complex drum parts in my music. I have a Boss DR-5 I bought 10 years ago and found it to be good, but still not easy to add all the fills, and breaks that make drums more believable.

Within the last month I found a drum machine software that is very visual and easy to use. Its called Hydrogen and it is cross plaform and open-source (its free) with linux and windows (I use both). Currently it is a sample based drum pattern sequencer. I find the default drum kit to be pretty good and use it for most of my drum tracks.

Hydrogen allowed me to build drum patterns, fill patterns, etc, and then place them in a song sequencer that is grid based (very easy). From there I export my drum track as a wav file and use it in my projects.

It has really helped me develop better rhythm tracks. Its free, so why not give it a try?

By the way, I liked your song as well.
