Hm. Dream Theater, huh?

OK...Despite being a lifelong RUSH junkie, I never thought much of Dream Theater. Too prog, too trippy, too complex, too inaccessable. I just couldn't get my teeth into it.
So. This is where I smooch the butt of all you DT heads. I caught a VH1 Classic Concert of them, circa '92 or so. And while I still think the same stuff about their catalog, I gotta say that is a bunch of very talented guys, in particular guitar and bass players. Dam good drummer too, and even the vocalist is pretty good. It was a good show to watch. I don't know that I'd listen to them much, but I'd sure as shootin' shell out to see them live...

  • You should've seen the version of By-Tor and the Snowdog they did on their 6DoiT tour.
  • OH YA! 8) The little band outta Berkley,in one word\"SMOK'IN\" Everyone in that band has chops and Petrucci is afreak'in guitar MONSTER  I wish I had an 1/8 of his talent.....now that I think about it, I wish I had an 1/8 of any talent
  • Actually, I love DT, but prefer the earlier stuff - Images & Words, and Awake. Laer they got TOO prog, IMO. I like melody...
  • If you get a chance, check out their DVD \"Live at Budokan\". They do a 10 minute medley of their insturmentals (which is insane to begin with) but they added the \"angle\" feature on the DVD. You can choose any one of the band members and watch a close-up view of the entire 10 minutes without it jumping around. I've seen them live 3 times. The last time was at the Kodak Theatre in Rochester - i.e. Perfect acoustics, stationary seats on the floor and balcony so there was no moshing NONSENSE. King's X opened for them - I think it was up there in my top 5 best concerts ever.
  • For me, Scenes From New York was a better intro concert. I'm used to listening to Rush, so DT didn't do much for me in the beginning. I bought the Budokan dvd and was blown away by their talent, but was bored musically. Since Petrucci is such a monster, I kept giving them a chance and watched the Scenes From New York dvd. That clicked with me much better and now I'm hugely addicted.
Lots of people seem to like their old stuff better, but I like their new stuff just as much. Give them a few listens before making a decision about their music. You'll want to hear it all. Sometimes, they do go a little overboard on the shredding though, but the songs are still really good.
Score comes out on the 29th. I'll be one of the first to grab it. :D
  • I just started listening to them monthes ago and love em. The more I listen -the more I like. Also I have the rock discipline dvd and he's a great teacher.

I read an interview in which he says that he's interested in doing another lesson dvd. 8)
  • ya baby bring it on---the exercises alone on the first one are worth the money---my picking is better(not nose picking) :)

Well my nose picking improved.
  • Yeah, I can see there's enough to DT that guitarists are into it. I still think it's too heady, trippy, complicated for me, but I'm a lot more interested in them now than I was...
Anyone think being a DT fan and an expert nosepicker will get Kate Hudson returning my phone calls??

I went to a strip club in Houston where a stripper is a dead-ringer for Kate Hudson. Considering that she bought my friends and I beers and gave free lap dances, I think you'll have a shot.

DT takes a little getting used to. Now that I've given them a good listening to, I think their song-writing is really good and very listenable. It's pretty cool that Rush acknowledges them too. Petrucci said that he'd love for DT to do a tour with them. 8)

Yeah...when I first gave them a listen, it just sort of hyperstimulated me...it's a lot to listen to. Very complex music, which is good if you're in the mood for it. Otherwise it hurts your head and you end up with a Petty album on.
But those guys are clearly extremely talented players and excellent songwiters, which is most of the battle in making good music (good production helps.) And for the RUSH guys - who I admire a ton - to dig them, there's surely somethign to it. Now RUSH w/DT - THAT'S a ticket I'd buy!!!
SOOOO...Houston, huh? Where was that club? What was that dancer's name??? I'm there!!! 8^p~~~
  • I give the DT musicians all the credit. They are truly fantastic. But, can they write a song that is listenable, and enjoyable? I'm not talking in a gymnastics (VAI) way, but a song you can listen to, feel the groove and just \"F yeah\".
  • Check out \"I Walk Beside You\" off of \"Octavarium\". Great tune - not even a guitar solo in it. Killer groove, chord prog. and melody. I just saw them a few months ago for their 20th ann. tour and probably the 4th or 5th time total. I also was at the \"Scenes\" show in NY and that was awesome. They never fail to put on a fantastic show and they are one of my all - time favorite bands period.
  • I saw them open for Megadeath this year...They Totally stole the show it made MDs guitar player( who is nothin short of great) look average and slow. I would NEVER want DM to open a show its just not fair to the headliners

I think they have lots of listenable songs. Petrucci has lots of riffs that are very cool sounding, not just complex. \"In the Name of God\" off of Train of Thought has some kick ass metal riffing!

As far as the club in Houston, I'll have to ask my friends. I put it out of my mind as I got in a lot of trouble over that incident.

Hm. Got a wife, do ya? I can't think of any other way to get in trouble in that sitch, unless it's with the cops. Where I useta live, if you even touched a stripper the bouncers would rearrange your teeth.
Well. I just need a nice, hott, willing woman that likes tall guys. Stripper or not. I'm not fussy... So send 'em my way, guys! I'll buy you the 10 pak of strings you're wife doesn't understadn why you need!!!
  • Yep, got busted by the wife. The stripper gave me free lap dances and she felt my cell phone in my pocket (ahem, yep it really was my cell phone). She asked if she could use it, so I figured I had some free minutes and lap dances are about twenty five bucks, what the heck. Coincidentally, that's when my wife decided to call.

Ouch. That's the worst piece o' luck I've ever heard of. Bet you didn't get any guitar strings THAT Xmas, eh?
  • WOW  that is some bad luck man
but back on topic yeah DT is great and if you are getting
into them shredd I highly recommend you
    pick up Images & Words.

Oh and also saw Ms. Hurley and says she'll call you but you gotta quit stalking her.

Yeah, I need some suggestions from all you guys about where to start with this stuff, nice melodic, accessable, not too twisted.
I made albums to turn people on to RUSH - \"RUSH For Beginners\", \"RUSH For Intermediates\", and \"Advanced RUSH\". Starts them off with stuff they can dig, no Geddy-screaming, nice melody. Intermediate gets more sophisticated, and Advanced is the gnarly stuff, showing off their chops.
So with DT, I wanna start with the stuff that's easy to like. Guys?

By the way - I haven't followed her in weeks, just pined lustfully. What an ego. :?
Methinks she's needin' some shredd-lovin'...
  • Well, they have plenty of \"beginner\" tunes. Chronologically and off top of my head, try these if you haven't yet:

    Pull Me Under
    Take The Time
    Surrounded
    Innocence Faded
    Silent Man
    Just Let Me Breathe
    Misunderstood

Much will also depend on the kind of stuff you already like. I would suggest Under Glass Moon, Six O'Clock, Glass Prison, etc. but not sure how you feel about the heavy side of things... their newer stuff has been along those lines. Likewise, if you don't like happy(-ish) major songs, you might not dig Surrounded or Innocence. If you like acoustic stuff, Silent Man is one, but also there is Trial of Tears, Hollow Years, Anna Lee, all that other sissy stuff from FII.

I've heard snatches of some of these from Amazon and so on...it's really hard to figure them out. One minute, I think they're insanely talented to a man and write beautiful songs; the next, I think they're too head-bangy, too complex, it's tiring to listen to. Help me....I really wanna dig these guys, I know how good they are! :?
  • Here are some Shredd 8)

    One last time
    I Walk Beside You
    The Spirit Carries On
    The Answer Lies Within
    The Ytse Jam
    Only A Matter of Time
    Goodnight Kiss
    Stream of Conciousness
    Solitary Shell

    Hope That Helps
  • DT was the band that helped me survive the desolate musical wasteland that was the 90s. Theyve been my favourite band for 15 (?) years and I like their newer stuff even better than their older stuff (except train of thought!). Unfortunately, they have NEVER been to vancouver so i have NEVER seen them!!!! If given the chance, I will bitch about this constantly!

    Albums I like best:
    1. Scenes from a Memory: Incredible rock opera about reincarnation with a surprise mystery ending. You have to read all the lyrics.

    2. Octavarium

    3. 6DOIT

I still think that \"Spirit Carries On\" from the Scenes from NY is the pinnicle of rock & roll.

Silent man.....very listenable and easy enough for everyone to play.
  • Hey Everybody 8)
Here are some more beginner songs for all
    you people out there.

    Hells Kitchen
    A Fortune in Lies
    Another Day
    Through Her Eyes
    Overture 1928
    Erotomania
    Instrumedly

Also Shredd heard Liz still hasn't called you back
but there are some hot female DT fans out there that really love Rush

Can you believe it?? How can she not want me back?!?!
Anyway, thanks for the song tips - I'm trying to find stuff I can get into...and if chix dig it, that can't hurt. I've been into RUSH - BIG time - for something like 30 years, but I never met a girl who got off on it.

Get out of purgatory and move to Rio. If their concert was any indication, you'll find many Rush loving hotties.
As far as chicks liking DT, I have my doubts. I just watched \"Score\" and my wife was not impressed. Heck, she even told me that this is not music that she even remotely likes. As much as I love her, the good thing is that she's not allowed to pick what I listen to. I used to be a Rush addict, but now DT is tops. 8)
  • My wife pre orders tickets for us!! never changes the radio station and goes to every show!! She likes matchbox 20 but is amazed by DT and Rush!
