Vox AD50 or Roland Cube 60

Hey,

Which of these amps would you say is more suitable to doing small venue gigs.

Do they sound good at a high volume etc?

The music I play will be mainly blues and classic rock nothing with mega distortion.

You can't buy either of them where I live so I would have to import, so the tax added on will be quite a bit, So a tube amp is really out of the question.

Thanks

  • Hi !

Definitely the VOX for blues, and classic rock. It's a very good amp.
  • Particularly for what you will be playing, the VOX would seem to be the ideal choice. I use the AD30, and for blues/rock stuff, it is the perfect amp for me - I can drop the output for practice at home, and crank up the wattage/volume for playing live. As a bonus with the AD50, you'll be able to run an out to a bigger external cabinet if needed.

Not the widest selection of tones, but all things considered, plenty versatile unless you need super high-gain. The tones it does do, it does extremely well. Effects selection/customizing is not done real well, but for most of the blues/rock stuff I do, all I really need is the reverb. (After all, if I need other stuff, I do own the GNX3K...)

I must admit though, I've not tried or heard the Cube 60 - just never been a big fan of the Roland/BOSS COSM tones. Plenty of pros use them for gigging, I just don't care for them. Don't need them - I have my VOX and my GNX!
  • I have an AD50. For what you're describing, it should be pretty good. It's not as loud as a 50-watt tube combo of the same size... a nice 30-watt Fender can drown it out like it ain't no thang. But as far as tone... great cleans, good drive... I've used it for high-gain stuff, it does the trick. Effects are not very malleable (it's obviously not a Vetta), but it's usually sufficient for simple stuff. Never used a footswitch, so not sure how adaptable it is... there's a two-setting memory per amp model, maybe an fx on/off also.
  • I have tried both and own the Vox. It has plenty of headroom and doesn't have the sterile/shrill tone I found with the Roland... But that's my opinion. I think it is very versatile as well, just wish it had more presets...
  • Thanks all for your input.

I've actually just ordered a Laney LV200 Hybrid 65 watt, I played the LV300 in the shop and it sounded real nice. 8)

These are the latest Hybrids from Laney and I think they are built in the UK, they replace the TF series.

Both the Vox and Roland were to expensive after taxes.
  • i played the roland cube 60. it is very load for a small amp. i was very tempted. what put me off was that when you changed channels (amp sims) the volume on each was different and you couldn't control this without playing with the knobs. not ideal for live playing.

i went for a hughes and kettner instead. i've got the gnx for amp sims and am happy with my amp.
