  • I can't speak from personal experience on the E-Bay thing, but plenty of people wheel and deal there all the time.Check the sellers rating and feedback from other buyers, then judge for yourself if you want to deal with them.Find out if there is any kind of return policy(probly not)
As far as the Gibson goes, looks real to me.Is it a \"Zakk\" who knows. It has the wright pickups, but I would want to see a certificate of authenticity.(see if they'll fax you a photocopy, not e-mail)
The \"pilot run\"stamp on the back of the headstock has me intrested though :? The silloutte of Zakk decal and the way the headstock joins the neck tells me it has to be real, and not some Epy neck.
Check out Gibsons pro-shop and see what kind of info you can get on it.

I'm sure there are some more guys here that can chime in on it.... .......unless there gonna bid on as well
  • Dude they are obviously fake. As a rule don't trust sellers from China, no not a racist thing just common sense. Scan around ebay and you will come across thousands of \"too good to be true\" (because they are) deals on products sold by Chinese traders. Yes they will have 100% positive feedback, but check out their feedback, it's done by themselves and their friends. Think about it, a \"Buy Now\" price of 10 bucks for a Gibson?

  • That is a real genuine Chinese Gibsooon. May frum leal Gibzoon spessifacasoon.

Yeah...it's Chinese. Worth a couple hunnert I speck.
Now Japenese...those are some good guitar makers. ie; Epiphone, Ibanez, Jackson, etc.

I have bought a Peavey amp, and an Ibanez JS 1000...lots of songbooks, and have like a 150+ 100% positive which maybe 1/5 of that is sales....the rest purchases.

I have done very well, and have had a couple close calls with some creeps but came out on top. You need both eyes open. First of all...you are buying basically site unseen. Do not bother with anyone under say a 30 feedback account...and 100% positive. Do not strike deals off eBay!!! That is where the real crooks prey. Communicate with the seller alot on big ticket items and protect yourself with insurance, PayPal or a credit card.
Pay close attendtion to the ad write up. With this guitar for example...they say Chinese over and over. Know what it is you are buying...and what it cost elsewhere.
You can get caught up in bidding ...just to WIN. Set your limits on an item...before you even start bidding. Many times the bids may go over your limit....so what ...let it go. Be patient...your deal will come. If you just MUST have an item...that is a rare piece....well...again..you better figure before hand...just how badly you want it.

What will make you hate yourself...is say you are bidding on a used Digitech GNX4...and the bidding goes hot and heavy...and you end up winning a used GNX4 for $480 with $35 S/H....and you later find out you could buy a brand new one from Sweetwater for $450 with a rebate of $50 and free shipping.
  • I took another 25 sec. look. All this guys guitars are Chinese knock-offs.
They make lousy guitars...and even their knives suck. (I buy alot of knives...hehehehe)
They do make nice guitar amp tubes...however.

I'd pass him up simply because his feedback is 14. pssshhpppbbblit*spittle.

I would not bother with people with a 0 rating, especially if they are overseas. The thing you should watch for is the payment methods. Paypal is safe, as is COD or cash on pickup.
Think about it. If someone wants to sell something, and they are new to ebay, they are not going to have any feedback regardless of their honesty.

I use ebay extensively, and you can tell if someone is fair dinkum if they communicate with you quickly and their replies make sense, and if they say their name in the message.

Ebay is a great place is you are cautious, and not prone to impulse buying. Check out the seller and payment methods first. If you use paypal, you have leverage with ebay if something goes wrong.
  • hootman... you and I are in more of a position to make a judgement call with our experiance. Advising someone with no eBay experiance...it is only good and fair to them to caution them to someone who has a proven track record going. Maybe they won't get into trouble dealing with a 0 account...as you say...but...one thing for sure...they don't have our experiance in what to look for, how to pick up on certain things and frankly...the whole auction experiance.

It is my policy to not bother with low feedback sellers...or even buyers at times. There are so many others I can trust with my money or 100% account. I wish to limit my risk. Honestly...it is my feedback I am most protective of... as hootman said...your money has plenty of safeguards if you pay with PayPal or a credit card. It can be a judgement call...and I do make a call like that at times....but I wouldn't advise a newbie to.

It works in reverse as well. Some sellers will not sell to someone with a low feedback account. Newbies tend to fly off at the handle, and quickly assume the worst...and post negative feedback...without proper communication. Especially over shipping times...or damaged in shipping products, etc. Hell...I knew a guy who \"lost it\" because his computer wasn't fast enough, and claims he posted a higher bid...and the guy who won...ripped him off!...and the item was rightfully his. Made several complaints to eBay too. People like this will even come back and buy low ticket items...just to trash your reputation with negative feedback. Feedback is a maker and breaker on eBay. Reputation and track record plays a huge role.

Most of us starting out...just start bidding on low ticket items to learn the process. You begin learning as you go...and after 25-30 transactions...with 100% feedback...now you are ready to be taken more serious...and atleast have a fair understanding of eBay, and online auction bidding.
  • My mistake, and I stand corrected. I foolishly got sucked into lookin at just the eye candy    I (also new to e-bay)didn't see the sellers location till now.....and then I read the discription......then it started to make sence.DEAL/NO DEAL
Myself, will probly never buy off of the net.If I can't touch it before I buy it ,I don't want it.
But I have to admit.....they do sell some REALLY good lookin \"crap\"
  • Last week, I got to play with a circumspect Gibson.

It came in a Black guitar hardcase case with Gibson written all over it.

It had all the right colors, right trademarks. It had little paper tags around the neck like the real thing.

It had a serial number punched in at the correct place.

They were asking for USD 2300 but it appeared to me to be a USD 150 guitar.

The quality of materials was really bad, the joints in between the neck and the body were not ultra smooth. The finish was not the very best.

I started laughing at the guitar shop. The Guitar manager came out and claimed it was a real Gibson. He asked me why I was laughing, I said

Either you are trying to fool me by offering a fake Gibson

or Gibson is trying to fool the world with bad quality work. Which one is it ?

Now comes the punch line, So the guitar shop manager says he got the guitar from Gibson and can prove it to me. So he goes to the back of the shop and comes back a bit later with a Gibson business card of some Japanese \"Area Sales Manager\", complete with a pic of the guy and a big Gibson logo on the card.

The really funny thing is that the card was a fake as well, with bad quality printing and spelling mistakes !!!
    :):):)
  • i've bought lots of smaller items from ebay. mostly dvds and stuff for a couple of quid. i'd say this is definately a good way to start ebaying. you get to know how bidding works, set up a paypal account, and learn how easy it is to get sucked into bidding.

again, definatlely shop around and check prices on some items. i wanted the 3 dvd set demons films. they continued hitting 20 quid on ebay. i got mine from mvc music/dvd shop for 18 with free postage!

i checked the feedback from the guitar page. DO NOT TOUCH WITH A BARGE POLE. this is definately dodgy. all those question marks?! nobody actually left any comments and the names of the posters definately suggest they are not cosher.

i'd say buying something like a guitar on ebay is a bit dodgy unless it's from a dealer or, as someone else stated, it's a rarity - but even then you can't expect it to play well.

ebay is wicked but be careful. i've been lucky but there must be lots of people that have been jipped. don't become one of them.
  • That guitar actually looked authentic to me... Anyone can get a picture of the real thing and post it as their own.....Another thing with Ebay is that you get people who set up phony accounts etc. meaning you buy an item and never get it...Do a search for similarly posted items and see if the same pictures appear in another posting.

As far as buying on ebay, I have never bought a guitar on it but have bought Loop CD's and Amps with great results.

According to the GPS printout, Manitou should be coming around the bend past the truck dealership and shaaazaaam! We just happen to have a guitar player's discount tent sale going on to the first 5 truckers. Your choice a new guitar or new truck to go. :)

I thought it could be :

  • Hey there - there's so many people who've done well and/or poorly on ebay that I didn't even read the whole thread. But I'll give you my $0.02 worth:
I LOVE ebay; I'ev acquired countless goodies there, including manymany guitar relating things. I got my GNX3 and '4 there, even.
However, having done ebay for nearly 10 years, I can relay some pretty solid tips for you.
#1, and probably MOST important, is NEVERNEVER get it in your head that there's an item you MUST have. You'll go psycho bidding, and pay more than it's worth. There's always \"another one\". (I can't beleive I'm saying that, considering Elizabeth Hurley doesn't love me anymore... ).
Also - CHECK DETAILS on the seller. Where he is, how long they've been on, yada. Feedback ratings are especially important - just 'cuz their rating is 1058 doesn't mean squat. READ IT!!! I'd rather buy from a guy with +49 and he's 100% positive, than from a guy with a much higher number who's gotten lots of negatives. READ IT. For a quick recap, look at that little chart on top, that says how many +/neutral/- feedbacks in recent periods.
Also - payment by PayPal or Bankcheck/money order ONLY. No exceptions. Trust me on this.
Another thing - you don't always have to take their word for the items' condition or features. Don't be afraid to ask questions, and save the emails incase you get f_k_d and have to make a paypal or ebay claim.
All that said...although I've done it - and gotten lucky - (luckier than I have with Jenn, anyway :( ), I don't recommend buying either amps or guitars via ebay. Those are two things that are not only vulnerable to damage in shipment, they're things you really want to hear, touch, play, etc to know it's the right one for you. You're a lot safer buying things like strings, FX, stands, mics, rack gear, yada.
Still...I've bought half my rig via ebay, and while I've gotten a few things that weren't what I hoped for, I've done fine. Just do your homework, be careful, don't get overexcited, be patient. You'll get some good deals.
  • Well,
I BOUGHT MY GNX4 OFF EBAY!!!

And it came all good (2nd hand, new condition) on time, the guy even downloaded the manual and printed it off so it was nice and fresh etc. There was no USB cable, but i asked him about this and he posted one up.

If people totally boycott new ebayers, the whole system will crash. Just dont buy high ticket items of low feedback sellers.

Generally, most grief comes from lacking communication. Often commicating sufficiently (with honorable intentions) is enough to stay out of trouble as a seller.
  • and sometime you can get great deals

just stick to the principles layed out earlier

oh and another thing---wait till the last minute to bid---bid the max you are willing to spend--then walk away--that way you don't get caught in the bidding fever--if you've won-
    you won

I've sold many amps and gnx3 and rps and everytime I sell something-someone gets a good deal
I just sold a 4 month old line 6 for 200 less then I paid   --I had underestimated the demand---as a matter of fact I loose my tail everytime I sell something

so there are good deals out there just be careful and read the feedback
  • I always go for the lowest-ranked seller when the ratings appear to be good and genuine. I figure, the power-sellers will get their share sooner or later, and it's good to help people develop a positive reputation. After all, you never know what rare piece of gear they might be hogging that they'll want to sell later!

You are a noble human. I just go for the best deal on the best example of the gear I want, from a seller I feel I can trust.
When are they going to start auctioning dates with hot women???
  • I have bought several items from Ebay.

If you're looking for a clean amp, Roland Jazz chorus's are dirt cheap. Bought a JC55 on Ebay for $85.00. Don't know why JC's are so cheap used but they are. Great amps..

Bought 3 axes on Ebay as well.
Gibson Blues Hawk. $525. Local Pickup. (No shipping)..
97 American Standard Tele with Case. $575. (Mint + $35 shipping)
2005 American Standard Strat. $600. (With Case)...

Bought guitar electronics there as well.
    E-MU 1212 sound card $100
    Sonar Home studio XL. $59
GNX4 with gig bag and 2 gig CF card $300.00
    Roland GR20 synth with GK3 P/U $445.. (No shipping)..

Plus several other non- guitar related Items..

I'll echo earlier sentiments with 10 tips that I use:

    1) Check the reputation....

    2) Check the location of the item. (especially China.. You really think you are going to buy a Les Paul Standard for $4.99???

    3) Check Shipping charges. A great deal can be runined by inflated shipping.

    4) Don't fall in love with anything. It aint yours until you win it.

    5) I generally don't bid on items until about 30 minutes before the ending bid. I may watch the item for days, but why bid on it 3 days ahead of time? You tie up available funds on a bid that you may or may not win and it never fails. The deal of a life time (Buy it now) comes along at that time.

    6) Best Times for buyers on Ebay..
Now...Kid's going back to school need bread for tuition.. And may take an item and put a low Buy It Now price to raise the bread.
The summer.. People needing bread for vacation. Immediately after the new year. People needing bread to cover their Xmas bills.

    7) Worst times for buyers on Ebay...
    Christmas time.. (Obvious)..
Spring to early summer.. (Tax refund checks bring a lot of competition for bids to the acutions.)

    8) If you are dealing with a reputable seller most are willing to answer questions and supply extra pictures. When contacting a seller ALWAYS do so via Ebay NOT you personal Email.

    9) I personally prefer sellers who take Pay Pal..(I did one did, the strat, with a cashiers check and was nervous the whole time until the axe showed up at my doorstep..

    10) Lot's of deals out there. Make a list of the gear you really want. Check the listings every couple of days. If you see something you like add it to your watch list and monitor it's progress until the auction ends..

    Good shopping.. :lol::lol::lol:
  • Yah, tal nailed it. Just use your head. And send me the hottest girl you know that likes tall guys. :)
  • I wait till the last 10 seconds to bid. That way if you are the winning bidder, no one has time to reset their bid.
  • I wait till the last 10 seconds to bid. That way if you are the winning bidder, no one has time to reset their bid.
This is called \"sniping\". Not exactly an honorable practice, but it works. We all do it. Hoot is just the only one who admits it. 8)
  • This is called \"sniping\". Not exactly an honorable practice, but it works. We all do it. Hoot is just the only one who admits it.

Not Honorable....c'mon! That's like saying it's not honorable to wait until a sale to buy something! I have bought everything from axes to amps on ebay, and I agree with most of the advice given, but the gem everyone left out is sniping.

\"Sniping\" is a method of bidding in the last few seconds, making it impossible for other bidders to react. It only works if you have the highest bid, so I must be totally missing the point of \"honor\" in this. I have got great deals, and bought hard to win items using the sniping method. As I said before, you still can't win if you don't have the high bid, it's really just bidding by stealth.

There are companies (e-snipe and others) that will do the bidding for you, so you can just enter the auction number, your max bid and wait for the auction to end to see if you won. The bid is placed 5sec before the auction ends. The major advantage to sniping as opposed to just entering your max bid in ebay, is that no-one on ebay sees your interest in the item.

If you study any particular item on ebay, you will see items that auction off for more than identical items, simply because more people show interest by bidding. Showing interest in an item is EXACTLY what shill-bidders look for, it's like writing a bullseye or SUCKER tattoo on your forehead.

Shill-bidding is when the seller or his/her accomplice(s)artificially creates a \"bidding war\" with legitimate prospective buyers, by using alternate ebay accounts to counter bid, and escalate prices. They prey on honest people who show interest in an item by bidding WAY TOO early. If you really want to buy something on ebay...sniping is the ONLY way to fly.

I would recommend anyone purchasing on ebay to NEVER bid before the final few moments of the auction.... except for shredd. :P

Those are my thought, NOT yours,

    Dobb.
  • Well said Dobb. I was going to say something similar until I read your post but you said it all. I do not understand people who bid in the early stages (unless it's the seller and his mates pulling a fast one) as they are just putting up the overall price that the fastest/luckiest sniper will pay at the end. Also, there's more of a \"buzz\" from sniping as you wait in anticipation for that last couple of seconds to see if your bid won. Personally I count it down on my watch and have the bid ready to go and hit confirm on the 5-10 second mark. I have bought quite a few small items and one guitar from ebay, got it for half of the retail price so got a great deal and it plays great. With the money I saved I bought a couple of SD pickups to tart it up a bit. Try complaining... You just can't :lol::lol: I still haven't been ripped off yet on ebay but as I said earlier some deals look as if they're too good to be true because they are. Let common sense prevail :!:

    TY

    shando
  • Sniping is quite a sport on Ebay. Often enough, people who engage in it pay the price - end up overbidding just to make sure they're the highest when time comes to snipe an item. On the flipside, other bidders who do not plan on sniping might bid more than usual on a tough item, knowing the snipers will likely bid more. I say, let the kids have their fun!
  • Yeah Dobb, I stand corrected. They even make software that'll drop your bid in 1 second before sale end. I hadn't thought much about the whole bidding war/interest level issue until now. Ebay is a maze of tactics and tricks, so if I don't win the thing I'm after, I just bid on another one, or buy it somewhere else. I rarely bid on rare or unusual stuff there.
After years of ebaying I guess I've never bought anything on ebay that I couldn't find another one of if I didn't win the one I bid on. So I don't much care about how I bid, as long as the guy isn't cheating with shill bids so I get screwed. With a few exceptions...I bought my trusty ol' Peavey Special 130 there, and had to replace the Scorpion, but it was still a deal.

I personally like 'binez. I've had several and dug them all. I don't know squat about 7-stings but at least it's a recognizable brand. Too bad it isn't earlier so you could go take a look at it. But since it's a local guy and his feedback is good, it should be OK...just don't bid higher than it's worth. And Dobb says bid at the last minute!
By the way - I ADORE Australian women. If you don't win this auction, I'll ship you my 'binez/EMG hardtail if you'll FedEx me one of those cuties!!!
