mono plug-->regular headphones? HELP

i read the manual and it says that if you plug in a mono plug into the headphone output, it may damage the output driver. I plugged a 1/4 in. monoplug converter to the GNX4 to be able to plug in a set of normal headphones( like the cd player ones.) I used it for a while until i realized that your not supposed to do that. My GNX 4 is working fine.

I was wondering if this will really damage the output driver and if it is ok to continue using these cd player headphones ?

Thanks for any advice.

  • I really dont see any physical reason why this would damage the gnx4. If you look at it electrically, a mono plug is just summing the left and right channels into one. The gnx4 is still coping with the same impedance, so i dont know why they say it will damge your gnx4.
  • A mono plug short circuits the RING(+) to SLEEVE(-)GROUND for that channel. An adaptor/converter combines the TIP(L+) and RING(R+) with no shorts.

    BUT ... best practice is to split the headphone stereo with a Y splitter. Never try to Y two inputs - that's what mixers do. Use a minimal passive 2 CH mixer with mono out for your headphones.
