  • Atkins,
Very nice vibe to this song!! It had my head bobbin!! I realy dug it very interesting guitar parts!! The tone was great I would not mind emulating some of that tone myself!! BUT: I have a GNX4 so when you say cemetary gates patch?? I can't relate. To bad thou!!! Anyhow great job!! As far as the mistakes I liked it so much and it was so catchy to me!! They sure did not bother me none!! Hey keep the great tunes comming!! I'll keep my eyes peeled.

  • Really excellent work..
    Especially for a first attempt..
Can't wait to hear the vocals. 8) .
    I don't care what the Wickerman says. :lol::lol::lol: ..
Get rid of that distorted guitar and keep it clean.. 8)
Clean really sounds good with the groove you got going..

  • nice the guitars and drums recorded well

lookin forward to hearing it with Vox
  • vox will be shortly... just have to go buy a mic and wait for the guy who's singing to come record... can u only do 4 tracks with pro tracks plus??
  • Atkins,
I think the default amount might be 4?? But I keep adding audio tracks to my project. I add as many as I need. I know I've had as many as 6 or 7 in one project. I don't think that there is any limitt?? I think you just keep adding more until you have enough. I think the command is insert Audio track?? or something like that. Look in the top pulldown menues it should be obvious.

    God Bless!!

  • cool because i need to add bass and vox
  • hey atkins
you can do alot more than 4 tracs---my current song has 15 so I would say you could do at least 16 and maybe 32
  • wow what u doing with that many tracks
  • I'm just doing a instrumental----if it had vocals there would be more :)
  • I once had 108 (I believe that's my record).... of course, about half of them were junk from the get-go, usually the case with so many tracks. Virtual tracks is a key feature for me in any recording setup, have as many alternate takes as you want.
  • iliace
did you have that many on ptp or was it something else?
  • Sonar 4. They were originally recorded on a Korg D1600mkii and exported. PTP has a track limit well below 108.
  • i just need to know what are u doing with all them tracks wog are u doubling up the guitar tracks'??
  • There are usually multiple takes of each part. There is a dry track for all guitar and bass parts. There are rhythm and lead guitars. Many of the tracks are stereo pairs. Others are tracks reserved for punches and overdubs. Many times when two adjacent sections are recorded, each part is done on a different track to allow some overlap. Vocals are doubled up. It adds up pretty quickly...

Oh sorry, I thought you were asking me....
  • either :P i just only have 6 tracks cause there are 6 different things i'm recording am i doing things wrong... i only have 4 tracks in the song i uploaded because of 3 different guitar sounds and 1 drum track
  • Well technology kinda spoils you. Some of the best songs ever recorded were done on 2-tracks and 4-tracks. And they didn't sound bad!
  • so how should i be recording... double up each guitar track?
  • It depends on the kind of song and also on how you'll be mixing it. Sometimes having a second guitar part helps to beef it up; other times it'll interfere with vocals and other instruments.

I would definitely double up vocals whenever you can, it does wonders for both making them stand out and making any pitch errors less noticeable. Unfortunately, timing becomes an issue... even using a plug-in like V-Vocals you still won't be able to correct all the timing mistakes (or it will take you very long to do it). If you/your vocalist can do a nearly identical take each time, definitely double them up, maybe even triple.

In my experience, doubling up bass is not desirable. Drums, same... sometimes you'll mix a compressed snare/kick with uncompressed snare/kick, and sometimes same with the bass line, but those things don't really need doubling, and not practical to double up in the first place.

Remember, above all things... there are very few strict rules in recording and mixing. Some people use no EQ for mixing... others EQ the heck out of every track they have. Some people go easy on compression... others put it on everything. Of course, you also get everything in-between.

Check out the recording articles on gnx4.org, you might find them helpful.
  • even though i have a 3k and not the 4??.... are there going to be tutorials done for the 3k like there are for the 4?
  • They're the same as far as PC recording functions. The articles are not device-specific anyway, although a few features unique features of GNX3 are described.
  • cool thanks i'll check that out :) I am going to prolly re record my song this weekend plus the beginnings of another song... not to sure about the complete song i have 2 main parts but i think with that recorded and listening to it i will come up with ideas
i've been playing back insomnia in my mp3 player constantly to figure out maybe a solo or something to put in the middle and i'm thinkin as well to harmonize the break down on certain parts with the elec with chorus being regular and the 12 string acoustic sim the octave higher... I dunno and i have ideas to beef up the distorted parts as well doing 2 tracks seperate..... we'll see... this song has been in the works since 1998 and finally get this toy and i can do soooo much more
  • first of all I recorded everything in stereo--which adds up like iliace said.
then I wanted a diff tone guitar for the break and diif guitar tones for the solos---with pc recording you can just go wild and record it all---if you dont like that track -mute it and rerecord until your happy---delete what you don't want---I just started doing this way and it's workin out well. Thanx to iliace and g3456 for the advice
