How to harmonise?

Hey

I enjoy harmonising certain riffs as they sound good and thats what alot of my favourite bands do.The only reason i have been able to harmonise upto now is through trial and error.

What is the correct way to find the harmony of something?

  • Try the IPS. It may serve as a tutorial for you also.

For example, the following works on the A Major scale.

    Shift Amount: 3rd up
    Scale: Major
    Key: A
    Level: to taste try 40
  • You mean with a second guitarist?

The best way to harmonize is to stay at consonant intervals and within the given chord. If you stick to a particular scale, staying a 3rd or 5th above (or below) your mate, it should sound good. 6th is another good interval to try.
  • What you do is pick your scale/mode.
For most of what you play (maiden etc) it will be minor, mostly aeolian.
Then you pick your interval. Usually for maiden it is a 6th down from Dave's part.
get your note, then count up /down from 1 (or anyother interval) as you decend the scale, ie the original note is 1, till you get to 6. Do that for every note of your riff and there's your harmony.
  • Thanks for that, not as hard as i thought it would be :D
