Unreachable

Hey folks,
No, I'm not dead. All of you outstanding writers and musicians out there shamed me into finally writing something original, and it just took *forever*. Hope you like it...

  • well you are alive
    thats a cool jam!
from beginning to end I liked it --the mix is great--nice rythum and great solos
    loved it g

OK NOW DO ANOTHER ONE
  • Really good, great crunchy (\"Cocaine\") rythm intro, cool lead harmonies at the end....the vocal patch needs something tho, it doesnt sound like its part of the song (a big complaint of mine, the lack of at least ONE singing patch)...try the Craig Anderson vocal patches, a big improvment for singing tones (on his site)
  • Thanks, Cobalt. I was consciously trying to move the vocals forward a bit in the mix... I think I overdid it a bit. I Re-EQed, split the vocals and moved them back a tad. Same link.

  • Sounds better, but forget vocals---those guitars are just killer!
  • Great tune GH...
    Good to see you back..
Killer guitar work as usual bro.. 8) .

    See Ya,
    Tal.. 8)
  • granitehead,
I like the song!! I like your singing and mix as well!! Maybee I heard it after the remix?? Anyhow great playing and tone!! I like all your guitar work Rythem and Leads Kick!! Great job!! All original, thats great!! Hey what do you personnally use for your drums?? I asume not the sequencer in protracks??
    God Bless!!

  • Granitehead, Actually your lyrics were the highlight for me. I especially liked the line about \"being together but living alone\". I'm not saying it hits home with me and my wife, but I know alot of people who seem to have fallen into that rut.

    Great guitar work.

Good to hear from you again.
  • Partch: Thanks a lot! Yeah, what's posted is remix #2: Vocals center and back in the mix, and rhythm split with right chnl EQed slightly differently and delayed about 5ms to give it that big, full sound. Drums really are just ProTracks seq. thru the GNX's Rock kit.
Hey Mike, I *really* appreciate the comment about the lyrics. It's a tough subject.

  • Hey there granitehead.
    Awesome original piece. Nice mix.
    Great guitar work too.

  • Hey there GH Great new original tune :!:
Really well put together. Tight guitar work and your leads have great melodys to them.
Nice to hear those vocals too.
I am not a recording tech just a garage musician but when I want to place my vocals back in the mix I use compression and reverb.
Compression to take the edje off and level out any part of my vocals that were uneven in volume. I think it also makes your softer sung parts sound more full to my ear.
The reverb I add just 7 to 10% not enough to get that \"I'm singing in a barrel \" effect .You cant even tell its on but to my ear it place you about 10 feet deeper in the mix. just my 2 cent. Again great tunage :D
  • Hey 'head - I am HUGEly impressed. Excellent piece of work. I heard the remix, but to me the vocals sound fine, and I'm jealous you can write lyrics at all...mine are AWful.
Killer guitars - balance/mix, tones, and melodies; Drum track is kewl; overall really well done. Congrats on a great peice.
And I feel your pain re: vocal patches.. I d/l'd all of CA's and none of them worked at all for me. I make my own, or use the processing on my little Behringer.
'Course, it doesn't help that even my unprocessed voice sounds like a cross between a garbage disposal and a small animal being tortured. No wonder Elizabeth Hurley won't return my phone calls...
  • :( Someone once told me my voice sounded like a cross between
David Lee Roth and John Wayne :!: man that still stings a bit
    :shock: :oops: :cry: :roll: :lol::lol::lol:

Is that you singing on BFF?

Yup I sing all the tunes I post...[said with my best John Wayne accent]
  • Love the sizzle cymbal (cheesy drums though... ).

Cool song. You sound like the guy on B52s.

You did a good job arranging this. I can hear the bass and some additional percussion besides the cheesy drums.

    Great job.
  • Thanks much, guys... means a lot coming from the likes of you all!
ODB: Yeah, I wound up doctoring my vocals pretty much as you describe: compress, scooped the EQ a bit and reverb.
Mercy: Jeez, I didn' think the drums were *that* cheesy! :) But then again, I ain't no drummer. Maybe I should try Sonar's \"humanize\" function...

  • Hey granitehead that's a coool song! What did you use for drums and which vocal patch did you use?
    Good to hear from you!
  • Glider,
Thanks! Drums are just midi constructed in PTP thru the GNX4's Rock kit. I EQed them for brightness and compressed on the final audio track. I can send you the .mid if you PM me. I tried de-cheesing them by randomizing some hits and velocities... not sure I succeeded
Didn't use a vocal patch: Recorded dry using an Oktava MKL 2500 (I really like this mic; it was a great deal for $99 at GC) then slightly scooped the EQ, compressed and reverbed the dry track using Sonitus:FXs that came with Sonar 4.

  • I liked this nice jam feel to it

I liked the return of TWIN HARMONY towards end of solo, worked well on this track

I Need to write an original next

    good work buddy
  • Hi GraniteHead,

Great tune! Loved the double leads...Great tone with those Guitar patches you used. Nice job on the key transitions also. Kept it realy alive and moving. :)
  • Hi GH, fantastic song. Hey there's nothing cheesy about the drums, they do what they're supposed to :) Come to think of it, I don't actually think drums can be cheesy (I drum). Great vocals & lyrics.

    TY

  • macman & kirkbauer: Glad you like the twin leads. Boston is a *huge* influence of mine... no one does it better than T. Scholz.
shando: Hey thanks! Means a lot coming from a drummer!
