Cost Of Silence

OK guys - be gentle. This is my first attempt at recording. It's sort of unfinished - I'm working up a synth part to go in the intro, and the lyrics I wrote are SO BAD that I left the vocal tracks out (you can tell where they were supposed to be, in the verses/chori/bridge). But I'd like to hear what you have to say about the song, the mix, whatever. Just be gentle, especially you seasoned ax-slingers out there!

  • Over all a good mix,and nice clean gain structure.I'd probly pan the drum mix alittle more to the center and volume down on the hats.Hard to really tell without vocals though.Pull the solo down abit aswell, making it a little more suttle, instead of in the face. But thats just my opinion.Good work keep it up.
  • shredd,
Nice tune man!! I enjoted it even without lyrics!! Great solo I realy liked the way it flowed and fit into the song. Maybe you should try to add the lyrics and see what others think?? Sometimes what we think are not that good, we find others realy like. Who knows?? Anyhow great job Shredd!! I just expected different style from you?? I mean with a name like Shredd.
    God Bless!!!
    Partch
  • Yeah good stuff,

Just lower the solo mix a little.

Reminds me of something by the byrds.
  • Thanks guys, I apreciate the feedback. Keep it comin'. I think I'll do a quick remix and get the guitar solo a little more even in the mix, maybe even rerecord it with a less edgy patch. I might toss in some of the little synth/intro ideas I've been diddling.
Meanwhile, I doubt I'll put the vocals in; partly 'cuz the lyrics I wrote are so cheezy they make Celine Dion look like Jon Anderson; plus I sing like Rosie Perez on crack. But thanks for listening! Keep your eyes peeled for \"Cost Of Silence Remix\". And if I can do up some decent lyrics, I'll give the vocals another crack...
Thanks again for listening, and your comments! If any of you can get Paula Cole to come over and do some vocals for me (then spend the evening in the hot tub???) gimmme a shout!!! :D
  • Mr. Shredd,
Just got back and had a chance to listen. What a feel-good tune Dude!! If you can't score a Rush loving hottie with that, she aint breathin'. 8) 8)

Thanks 'out. I'm glad you liked it...funny thing is, it started as a very mellow, drama-laden song, and evolved into a happier song. But the lyrics still suck - very 'heavy' - and I want to write new ones to reflect the nicer tone of the song. Stay tuned for a remix.
And to be honest - if I could find a RUSH-lovin' hottie anywhere in creation, I wouldn't care if she was breathing!!
  • well mr shred
nicely done calm restful happy----I dont know it just put me at ease
Ya adjust the levels like the others said
maybe if you call the guy from nickelback to sing it -- you could well --you know
    rock on rush man

  • Thanks again for checkin' out my tune guys.
As you've all noted, the guitar solo was a bit intense. I've rerecorded it with a less edgy patch, and toned it down in the mix a bit. Check it out and tell me if I got it right:

Any which way, I'm glad you all seem to like my tune. But I still haven't done anything about the vocals...I need to collaborate with Kate Bush for better lyrics/vocals, then see if I can get her into my hot tub.
  • WOW!...If thats your 1st recording, I'd like to see what you accomplish after a couple months!
The toned down solo works so much better...and from one \"not so hot singer\" to the another...why not play the vocal melody & chorus on the Guitar...maybe use a different tone than the solo, or use a slide (the tune would be a killer instumental)

Actually, that's quite brilliant! It would make a good instrumental, and save me the shame of revealing my awful singing voice and my pitiful lyrics. You can tell I'm new at this.
Unless, of course, I can get Gwen Stefani to come over and guest-appear on my tune, then give me a massage. Or something.
Thanks for the comments...and for the encouragement. I hope to write some more stuff soon and record/post for all your enjoyment, and commentary...
  • ya good mix
cobalt has good idea---I thought the same thing the first time I heard it
  • That was a much better mix.Everything has it's own space to do it's thing 8) I also agree with the idea of using another instrument or guitar tone for the melody line 8) Good job and keep it up. :)
  • OK. I think you guys are onto something I should be thinking about...turning this thing into an instrumental.
So. I haven't the faintest about how to go about this - what kind of sound/tone/patch makes for good melodies? Chances are I'll use a guitar, since I'm better at it - I'm pretty new at keyboards, though I have an old Roland and a great Mini-Moog software synth I could use.
    Any suggestions?
  • HEY SHRED JUST PLAY THE SONG IN YOUR HEADPHONES AND START PLAYIN ON TOP WHILE SWITCHING PATCHES TILL YOU FIND ONE YOU LIKE
OR PUT DOWN A MELODY LINE THAT YOU LIKE--RECRD DRY AND TRY REAMPING THE TRACK TILL YOU FIND WHAT YOU LIKE
  • Dude  ,we're suppose to be supportive here. Why are you yelling at him  I know,my CAPS key get stuck once in awhile too.But ya,WOG is wright, try different pickup positions with each patch aswell.
What kind of Roland synth do you have?(I love the old jupiter8)
  • I have the wonderful Juno-60, perhaps the kewlest analog synth since the MiniMoog. I love the thing, I just wish I played 'boards better, so I could use it in more stuff! I also have the most excellent MiniMoog soft-synth, which was actually freeware!!.
Meanwhile, I've got my toon in my GNX as an MP3, so I can play it while I fiddle around with different sounds, and perhaps some good \"vocal\" melodies and harmonies. Hinthint: once I get the right tone to use, I'm considering throwing in some IPS stuff for harmonies. This oughtta be fun!
Now if only Nancy Wilson would come over and give me a hand. I'd give her BOTH of mine!!!
  • don't listen to the EVIL shadow---he's trying to get me in trouble--AGAIN
  • Shredd'
Nice feel to the piece.. 8)
Now comes the hard part writing the words and singing.. .

That's the main reason I play lead guitar so I wont have to sing..:lol::lol:

    See Ya,
    Tal.. 8)
  • Thanks 'tal...
I really saw this as a \"lyric'd\" song...but my lyric-writing ain't so good and my singing isn't any better. So I'm going to go the \"instrumental' route for now, see how it turns out.
If I were a better singer/lyric writer (not to mention guitarist) , I wouldn't need Nancy Wilson to come over and help me. But I'd still want her to. How many 40-something chix are stellar ax-slingers, great songwriters, excellent vocalists, and hot blonds all in one??? I'll take TWO!!!
