Hum in my Hot Rod Deville amp.. help !

hey there ! i seem to have a problem with hum noise in my brand new hot rod deville amp. i've been told that it's probably a problem related to insuficient ground connection in my house, which is causing the amp to produce the 60hz (or so) ground loop hum noise. What should I do about it ? D'you think a hum eliminator would sort it out ? I'm thinking about getting a noise supressor by boss but i don't know how much that will affect my signal, although it features a threshold knob bla bla bla. what if im playing live and i deliberatly want feedback from the amp ? then the noise supressor isn't much of a great help, is it ? lol. That's why I'm asking if getting a hum elimnator is good for this kind of problem, and does it affect the signal (im guessing i would connect it to the FX Loop of the amp )

Thanx a lot.

  • Try different outlets around the house first. Be sure it's not the new deville itself. If you have a slight buzz, check to see if the ground lift switch on the amp. Also if you have a GNX4, check the ground lift switch there as well (rear panel).

A hum elimiminator may not be needed. Good to have one if you play Live though cause ya never know if you'll run into that situation.
  • van_mocen,
I did not have a Hot Rod Deville. But: I had an all tube Pro JR do the same thing Brand New out of the Box From Musicians Friend. I had to Return it. When the next amp came it did not Hum Like that?? May or May not apply to you. Just a Thought.
    God Bless!!!

and where would that ground lift switch be ? i don't think it has any lol. thanx anyway;)
  • I repair these for a living. Try plugging the amp into a mates house to eliminate your place. If it still hums then the problem is in the amp.
Most hum problems are related to the main power supply electrolytic capacitors or output tubes.
Try it with all three preamp tubes removed. DOes it still hum? This will indicate if its in the power amp or pre amp.
Try new output tubes. If it still hums I suggest you take it to an expert.
  • Check and make sure your tubes are plugged in tight. They sometimes come loose during shipping
