Need some help choosing a model!!!
Hey folks, need some help here. I'm interested in the GNX series, and have done some research, but when it comes to the descriptions\\features, half the time I don't know what the hell they are talking about! So I need it broken down in plain english. Appreciate any help!
1. GNX 3, 4, 3000 - Any real huge difference that sets one apart from the other?
2. Is the GNX4 the best?
3. Can the GNX do everything all the other models do? The Learn A Lick feature sounded cool, but I didn't see that posted as a feature.
4. Quality of Sound - Do the effects (all models) sound good at higher volumes\\different types of venues? Looking to play out as well as record.
5. Competition - May be an obvious answer, but how do these models stack up against the competition for the same price?
6. Ease of use?
7. Drawbacks?
Again, I appreciate any info you can give. Thanks!

Gnx4 is the 'flagship'
The learn-a-lick is not in the gnx4, but included in the software that comes with it. The major difference between the 4 and the 3 is that the 4 has 4 track USB recording, where as the 3 is onboard. The 4 also has 3 control footswitches, which allow you to control any 3 parameters each (for a total of 9 parameters).
The sound is of high quality. It depends on how well you tweak your sound, if you mean the TONE or the SOUND, the sound is excellent, but the tone depends on your settings.
I bought the gnx4 for a reason. Nothin comes near it in terms of a workstation. Many say the pod or the vox tonelab have the edge over the gnx (by the skin of their teeth) in tone, they dont allow you the same enormous flexibilty as the gnx series. Nor do they have recording capabilities.
Ease of use? Are you technophobic? If so, forget it. Can you use a computer? If so, then ou can use the gnx4, because it does not lay it out on a platter. You can get ANY sound you want, but its up to you. Many pedals sacrifice felxibilty for ease of use, the gnx4 doesnt. That said it isnt hard at all, it took me in total about 5 hours.
Drawbacks? ummm, having to explain to all the dumb tube amp advocates how all real tube amps do is make you poor.
Drum mach (8 kits), Midi, Wav, Mp3 playback
On board 8trk recorder capable of 6.5 hrs of recording time (2Gb CF card)
patch editor that is simple to use.
Control assigns 3 Switches 3 params each, 3 Exp pedal assigns.. That times 3 possible amp models and you have 36 sound variables of any one patch.
Doing orig's as well as Covers is easy with the GNX4.. even the most complex arrangements are possible.
Effects are very clean on the GNX4 since the processor is designed to handle multiple functions with limited latency compared to other GNX units that have lesser functionality.
GNX3000 has more enhanced models, CBM technology, limited assigns (3) to EXP pedal only. 65 User presets max. One drum kit sound. No other playback function internally. basically GNX2 features with USB and MIC input added. GNX3000 has increased patch latency.
Pro tracks Plus recording suite available to both GNX4,3000.
Both models can suit Live and recording applications depending upon what you need featurewise for live sound applications.
The last item regarding GNX3 saving entire patches only is no longer valid - you can now save amp/cab model separately in GenEdit 1.6.
Right now, I'm struggling with the actual physical layout\\design. It looks like the 3000 has a little more foot room, and I do have some wide feet.
The other thing is there's no onboard storage on the 3000, and I like that convenience. It very difficult to push stuff over to a PC? I've messed with some of the ProTracks software through a M-Audio soundcard and it was....frustrating at best?
Also, does the 4 have a tuner? I didn't see that anywhere.
What I need is the layout of the 3000 and capabilities of the 4. I heard a rumor about a 4000? Is this just myth or is something on the near horizon?
Thanks again!
GNX3000 has certain advantages (as well as disadvantages) when it comes to the amp model sounds. Most stock models sound awesome, but warping new models becomes a bit more of a chore. The onboard CF card on GNX4 units is a great tool, it makes GNX4 a good swiss army knife as a backup device, as well as an all-purpose primary device. Onboard recording is also a plus, you can arrange sophisticated loops/overdubs on the fly.
At any rate, I am now the proud new owner of a GNX4....now what do I do?! I'll catch up with you guys around the GNX4 forum as I'll definitely be needing some help! (Got to jump on a plane today and don't even get to play with my new toys for a week! :x )
What do you do now? RTM, play with it a lot to get used to it all, and have fun!
Oh - and if you see Elizabeth Hurley, tell her to start returning my phone calls.
I'm the night owl most of the time here, so even if it's late nite.. you can get an answer.. unless I have a daily thing going on the next day!
