Rockport Mississippi Rag (By Tal)
Just got back from the old home place in Rockport Mississippi, right on ole Highway 27, Between Omah and Georgetown Missisissippi....
No phone, no TV, No stereo... 8)
Just kicked the old hound dog off the porch and wrote this piece which, I'm dedicating to one of my favorite pickers...
\"Mr. Jerry Reed\" 8)
(The Alabama Wild Man)

Just have always dug his chickn' pickn' style.
In honor of Mr. Reed I performed the entire piece on my new USA Telecaster.
Just love the axe and it's hard to get that Tele tone out of anything but a Tele.. 8)
Here's the link for the tune..
http://www.digitech.com/soundcomm/guitar_view_music.asp?productid=199&music_id=2310
Hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did composing, playing and recording it..
I'll be on the road the next couple of weeks for business, but I'll have one of my axes with me and hopefully some inspiration will hit me laying around those damned old hotel rooms at night..

See Ya,
Tal.. 8)

Well BlueGator...
You asked for it..
Tal's musical life story (The short version)
Got my first guitar when I was 8..($19.00 Kay acoustic)...
Just fell in love with it... 8)
Decided about 2 days after I got it (That would make me 8 years old and 2 days at the time) that I was going to be a professional guitarist..
Took lessons from a really great guitarist for about a year..
I was too young and ignorant to know he was that good..
Played that old Kay for about 4 years and finally got an Oahu (Made by Supra) fiberglass body electric guitar...
All the time I was learning Ventures, Chet Atkins, Mo Town Soul, etc... (The music of the day)...
At 16 I saved my money from my first summer job. Went to the local music store and bought my Baby..
A 1968 Les Paul Gold Top... 8)
About the same time something very strange happend to me.
I was exposed to Jimi Hendrix and the cat just blew my mind.
All this time I'm practicing about 4 to 10 hours a day..
Dad tells me nowadays that I worked harder at the guitar than anybody he's ever seen work on anything..
Began gigging at 17 with various bands.
Upon graduation from high school at 18 I heard the local junior college was giving away scholarships to guys who were good enough to make the jazz ensemble.
Picked up my trusty Gold Top, and my courage, and tried out..
To my surprise, I was accepted..
Wasn't that good a reader at the time but the faculty said I impressed them with my ability to improvise and my solos...
Now I really began working on playing the guitar full time. Music theory, sight singing, composition, stuff I had really never given a great deal of thought to..
My 2nd and last year of junior college, we participated in the state wide competion for scholastic jazz bands. I won the Best Junior college Jazz player award in the state of Texas in 1974..(Jeez...Has it been that long ago???)
Already had 2 years in the scholastic thing and had been saving my money from gigs and summer jobs and went for the whole enchileda.
B.A in Music which I obtained in 1976..(That long ago again)..
Now idealistic Tal sets out to conquer the world with his trusty Gold Top.
Started a jazz trio doing all original material. Never got one club to book us..
Damn near starved to death..
This nonsense went on about 6 months and during that time period young idealistic Tal became Realist Tal...
Eating regularly and not having to shop lift balogna from the neighboorhood convenience store was a very good thing, I decided..
Also there's a lot to be said for sleeping in a real bed every night..
So Tal became a musical whore...
Played a few bands rock, country, blues etc...
Anything to make a buck..
Taught lessons...
Worked music stores on commission sales..
The last couple of years, I was pro, got well enough known around town that I didn't have to play in a steady band..
I'd get enough calls during the week (Ususally 3 or 4 nights), that differnt bands around town would use me to fil in for a missing player..
One night, Tal would have a head band on playing Hendrix. The next night Tal would have a cowboy hat on playing Merle. The next night Tal would have a Tuxedo on playing \"Tea for Two\"...
After enough years of this nonsense the light hit me about 3:00 A.M. February 1st 1980.. (That long ago again
I was packing up my gear in a Country Western club, looked around and just said...
\"Hell with it\"...
All those years of hard work and dedication and this is where I'm at. 3:00 A.M in a C&W bar, got to be at the music store at 10:00 A.M, and spend my free time giving lessons to live in the outskirts of Poverty???
Finally just said..
\"Screw It!!!!!!!\"
Got a real job (And still my present one) February 4th 1980...
Sold all my other axes except the Gold Top..(Couldn't stand to sell it)
Put the Gold Top in the battered case on February 4th 1980 and did not open it for 25 years...
Had a very nice life in the mean time. Raised a family, bought a house, etc....
I don't know why, but one year ago I was just driving by a guitar store. Had a little time to kill and walked in. Damn....Ran into one of my old buddies there, still jammin'.... 8)
Next thing you know I'm walking out of the store with an Epi Joe Pass, jazz box.. :?
Next thing you know, I amaze myself that I can enjoy playing the guitar again after all these years..
And here we are a year later.. One GNX4, and 7K worth of axes bought in one year. (Didn't have to buy any amps, Didn't sell those)..
I'm still amazed every time I sit down to play at how much enjoyment I get out of playing now..
I guess because it's not a job anymore, just something I enjoy doing..
Get to play what I want and not what other people are telling me to play..
And it really makes me happy that wore out old jazzer Tals stuff is dug by you guys... 8)
Once again...
Thanks for all your kind comments...
See Ya,
Tal..

There are actually 2 pages but don't show up unless you hit the tune link?
I am 54. I started guitar at 13. It was with an all mohagany Harmony acoustic. I made the mistake of going the self-taught route...not learning to read music. (like so many of us in those days) We wore records out to learn a song...and I still suffer to this day from lack of proper knowledge and training.
I also started with the songs of the day...and when Jimi came along...I got electrified. I got good at what I did and how I did it. But that was a far cry from the talent and devotion you had. I probably loved it as much...but I knew I would never make a living at it. I worked day in and day out in Construction and Firefighting.
I grew up around a lot of top name talent. I am kinda baffled why I didn't get more involved in the music industry. There are people who would kill to be in the shadows of greatness. I don't have answers to much ....but I also don't live with regrets either. I left music too for like 25 years or so...and just got back into it as well about a year ago. I also spent about 6-7k on gear. I can say this whole heartedly...I'm so glad I found my way back to music. I do wish I would have kept it more in my life than I did...but, I'm making up for that the best I can now....and I appreciate it more.
I'm trying to learn it right this time. Still need to find a teacher,,,but my God these DVD's and guitar tab songbooks, and some of the gadgets these days...like this computer!!! :P 8) I am coming right along with the program....even on my own. I just need the discipline. I certainly get great inspiration and motivation by stopping by here and soaking up on talents like yourself. THANKS!!
The good thing is bought some gear a year ago and it's good to be here. I missed this. It's also good that many others in this forum had also remembered things form their past and made the decision to come back.
Thank you very much guys..
You just made my year. 8) .
See Ya,
Tal 8)
