i need some help friends...headphones, vamp2, etc

I own a behringer vamp2 that I plug an ipod and headphones into to use for playing in the living room or taking on holidays. For some reason, if I turn the volume and the master down to 0, I can still hear the output on the phones, but only in one ear. If I leave the volume at 0 and gradually turn up the master, I can eventually hear in both ears – but often with a high gain patch, the volume is bordering on being uncomfortable. If I turn it down, then one ear is much louder than the other. I have good quality Grado phones with an impedance of 32 ohms.

Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Is it possible to do anything other than put cotton in my ears? Can I get decent headphones (not too expensive) with a higher impedance? What should I be looking at (brand and impediance)?

Thanks

  • Sounds like an issue with the Vamp. My Sony MDR7506 are pretty low impedance, but don't do this. Can you take the V-amp to a store to see how other phones behave? how does it behave if you use the phones jack into a line in on other gear (which will be high impedance)?
  • Audio Technica ATH-M40FS are as good as you can get on the lower end.

Try a new set of phones and see if the prob goes away. You may have a bad jack or intermittent jack connector on the Vamp itself. Very common on portable devices. Move the plug slightly from L-R and see if the prob comes and goes. If it does, it's probably the jack.
