Is GNX For Me?

I have the new Crate 120 watt solid state combo with two 12's and a RP 80 I was planning on using for the effects. But when I found out I could download patches and get tones similar to Randy and Eddie from Guitar World and One with a GNX I was intrigued.

Does the GNX3 do everything it says it does, will I be able to use the patches and have them actually sound good? I also heard the GNX sounds like crap through an amp.

Thank you for helping a foolish noob.

Also more about my guitar, it's an Ibanez RG 350 with EMG 81 and 89 in the neck that pulls out to single coil.

  • The GNX altering tone is not the issue. It's the amp and cabinet of the guitar amp voicing that alters the tone of the GNX. The GNX is not an effect only device, it is an amp modeler, and a preamp.

If you keep patch levels and amp gains low, and give your amplifier room to work, you can get amazing sounds out of it.

    I've ran a GNX4 and 3000 Live through an X100B, V3, JC120, Mesa MkII C, with very little problem.

I do not use my recording type patches ( overdriven, highgain). My amp cabs are voiced for 4x12 Emin Swamp Thangs, G12t75's. So the amp models are reduced in gain...more or less \"tuned\" to that voicing of my rig. We're in the process of coming up with multiple cab models for many amp variations and speakers. Close to reducing this freako problem, but soon. I'll also post a new video on how it works. Stay tuned... we're about 3/4 the way there..

In all fairness to modelers out there, amp models are designed with that voicing in mind of a particular amp. So if you had a marshall amp model going through a Fender twin, it's no different than putting a Marshall head on a Fender Jensen loaded cab.. it's going to change. Guitar amps are NOT transparent at all. This is a major reason why Digitech suggested direct models and used on a Clean guitar AMP channel.

Our method here can also present the GNX as an EFX only device. We are trying to make the cab and amp models neutral. It's difficult to do, but hopefully, we have the technology... some very friendly custom cab designers have given insight to the process. again.. stay tuned...
  • So if I run the GNX3 on the clean channel I should have no problem using the patches from Guitar One and World?

Again, thank you and sorry I'm a noob.
  • With that amp, you'll probably get decent results at least. I used to have one - it kept breaking so I got mad and threw it away one day - but when I did use it GNX3 sounded fine.
  • So I will stll be able to use the Guitar magazine patches? That's what's most important to me right now.
  • Obviously there are no guarantees - but I would say at the very least it's worth a shot. Just be sure to anticipate some major initial tweaking.
  • I have a crate FXT120 twin combo, and also a crate G130C XL head going through a Quantum Stack. If you put the amps on the clean channel you will get a really good sound, you can adjust the EQ to tweak the sound for even better results.

    NOTE:
If your looking to download the presets from Guitar world and Guitar one those are okay but I found that the MFX super models are far much better then the presets you download from the magazine sites. If you get the GNX I strongly recommend buying the super models you will not regret it. I have a GNX4 and those presets sound awesome through my crate amps. You may want to check though; because, I don't know if the super models come in any other format other than for the GNX4.
