  • ZOOM RT123, or the older RT234, Alesis is good too. Zoom's latest give you the option of programming intro's verses, fills, and endings which I find very useful in song creation. That's about all you'll find at that pricerange
  • i have the boss dr-3 dr.rhythm it works well for me.you can use thier presets or make your own it also has midi.
  • Boss DR-3 is the way to go for me. I dont want to write freekin drum parts in detail for days like with my old sr-16... just wanna find a good rythm progression ...find the right tempo. then play/edit it back in the arrangment of my song. they are great for practise if you dont have a drummer yet too. ;) Just my 2 cents lots of cool stuff out there but for me having one of those overkill drum machines that keeps you programing instead of playing is not for me.
  • does the boss dr-3 allow u to program single hits as well as loops?
  • I was looking at getting the Alesis DM5 module and some triggers to create midi drum patterns to be used in the GNX4. As far as hearing it live, I've heard a lot of bad reviews about the Alesis saying that the internal presets sound too techno. Here is a sample of the Alesis DM5 module. The sound is very processed sounding.

I've also been looking at the DR-880 which sounds a lot better from what I've heard. Hear samples here.

The Boss DR-880 does a lot more. It's also a guitar and bass processor as well, but lacks the critical trigger inputs that the Alesis DM5 has.

Does anyone know if I can run a MIDI cable from the output of the DM5 into the MIDI input of the DR-880 and just use Alesis as a triggering module?
  • They are all easy to use and everything has a leaning curve. With that said, I'd go with one in the Boss D series. Stay clear of the Alesis SR16!!! Easy to use, but the sounds are cheap IMO...
