New guy. Gotta question.

Hi guys, this place is awesome, great place for users to get together and share ideas. Ordering my GNX4 on payday, seems like a kick ass machine. I got a question for some knowledgable person out there that will hopefully end my misery with one of my band mates.

Little history. I had a Yamaha DG-Stomp for a few years, no complaints, did the gig stuff no problem, never had a problem with it. The guy in the band that owns the PA and speakers wouldn't let me plug in direct to his powered mixer through my outputs because he said I'd blow his speakers, always wanted me to pipe my amp and all that. It's his stuff so I didn't complain too much even though I told him it would sound a lot better to let me come out in stereo through the mixer. I know there is some truth to it, but he was going by what some guy told him, he's not very experienced in the whole live band thing, and neither was I so I said screw it I'll just play like this. It causes a lot of complications and level changing and crap all the time.

So what I'd like to know is, how can I prove to him it's safe to plug my GNX4 directly, in stereo, or even mono through XLR or whatever into his powered mixer. Yorkville MP8DX, if that helps. We play classic rock and some newer stuff, but not Slayer or anything that would really give it hell.

Thanks, looking forward to hanging out here.

  • Hi, it should not be a problem. I service Yorkville and the MP8 can easliy handle a GNX. The concern many talk about is High end noise like you get from PODS and other very bright pedals. It's not the power amp he's been warned about..it's the horns in the speakers. The GNX with Speaker Comp on should have no problem with this. What he needs to do is cut the high end on the mixer channel if need be.

If you really want to be safe, buy a stereo limiter and put it between the GNX and the Channel strips on the mixer. If he understands PA's he should know to always have a limiter from the board to the Power amp. The MP8 is powered and only has a protection circuit but it's not really a limiter. That may be what his friend is warning him about. You still can play it safe and add a limiter unit as I described above if it makes him feel better. Simply though, the GNX is designed for PA use. I do it all the time.
  • Thanks man!!! Can't wait to buy and learn how to use that pedal.. that was the main concern, his speakers, not frying the amp or anythng. I showed him stuff i printed off the internet and he still didn't want to trust it. I'm sure once he sees the pedal i'll be using he'll believe me when I say it's built for it, tell him about the speaker comp. and stuff. I hate micing my amp, not needed for the gigs we play, I could get by with just my amp and maybe a monitor for the drummer 90% of the time.
    Thanks again.
