compression question

I have recorded a acoustic track for a new tune I am working on.
While recording the part I muted the strings with the palm of my hand between chord changes. Its a quick choppy kinda \"hot for teacher...finish whatcha started ' kinda thing. (though not nearly as cool) anyway I created a kind of percussive sound when I muted the strings. Now on playback it sounds like a kick drum is popping the sub woofer too hard...its really my hand coming down on the acoustic muting the strings though...

Question is compression the best way to take this out of the track? or is another editing technic required. Its just in the verse part of the tune that you hear the popping noise so I really dont want to redo the whole track...I would rather just learn how to fix it. Any advise would rewl. thanks 8)

  • I may be wrong (and probably am :D ), but I think you would need a compression and an EQ. If the muted parts are too hot, compression will bring them down. The EQ will minimize the \"subwoofer\" problem.

I don't know what program you use, but in Sonar you can add an automation so you can EQ the muted parts, and turn off the EQ on parts where they aren't needed.
  • Use a limiter or a gated compressor. Work within the threshold of where the bad thump is happening. If you have Sonar Sonitus is awesome for this. You could also use the EQ automation as described previously. If you don't have Sonar or anything more than PTP you can try reamping the track.
  • Hey guys thanks for the responce. :D I use Protools LE 6.9 so i could bring up the compressor and limit it way back and then turn up the gain so the volume is back where it was. I will look into the automation thing and see if I can EQ it out a bit as well I have never tried to automate anything yet  but its about time I stepped up and tried it I guess. thanks again for the quick responce. very helpful as always
  • Out of interest, did you use a condenser mic to record this? They can be boomy depending on how you place the mic.

I used my Ovation through my GNX3 into my MBOX. no mic. I thought it was the kick drum being too hot because I BBE too much but after Isolating the sound it was the acoustic...go figure. :?
  • If your Ovation has an on board EQ, try trimming down the lows before recording and see if that solves your problem.
