Dr Mike's Patch

Ok. I couldn't resist it. I like this patch so much I named it after mysef. This is my main patch. I use it for most everything I do. I have versions with slight variations but the main tone and settings are the same.

I'm using a Gibson with humbuckers set to the bridge position. The pickup simulator is set to 'humbucker -> single coil'. If you're playing a Strat or single coil pickups I suggest turning off the pickup simulator but stay in the bridge position or this patch will be too thin.

It's very responsive. The clean channel is really great. Play lightly and it's really clean. Pick harder and you get a nice light crunchy sound.

Please let me know if this works.

  • Hey DrMike,
I got your patches to work. For all you pc users you need Xedit 1.3.
I will give this and the Eric Johnson a try latter today!
  • Fantastic ! Xedit 1.3 ? Makes sense. That's what I'm using.

I'm really interested to see what you think. Let me know what rig you're using too.
  • DrMike,
Tried this out last night and I love it! I don't get the Eric Johnson out of it like you do. I guess that has something to do with my playing skills! Interestingly enough, I started playing some bluesy SRV stuff while fiddling with the patch and it sounded amazing. I noticed in the parameters you created a custom SVR sim. Love the patch, keep on posting! 8)
  • Really glad you like it. Hope the tone is good in rig. What guitar/amp you using ?

Yes, this started out as my SRV patch for bluesy stuff. I like the tone so much that it's the base for most of my bluesy patches. I used my Satriani patch (with some very minor changes - lowered the overdrive/distortion a bit) in combination with my SRV patch for this one. This is basicaly my sound. I play around with the effect settings for other songs but don't do much to the base amp settings.

To get Erick's tone you have to play around with your pickup selector and pick tone controls. He's a trip... Switching pickup settings and stomping around on his pedals. I'm still trying to coordinate all that... I'm getting closer but still not there...

Depending on your guitar try playing in the bridge position for the opening of Trademark. Then switch to middle position with the tone on the neck pickup turned down and step on pedal A. Oh heck it's compicated... Try these as a start. This patch actually has three different tones clean/distorted/overdrive (Amp B + Stompbox).

Check out the parameters for Pedal A !

  • Haven't been around for a while. Been busy with other tasks. I was surprised to see this post was active. Hope you found the patch and got it to work. Let me know if you have any problems. I'm still really happy with my last few patches and haven't really created any new ones lately.

Been listening to David Gilmour a lot lately. Been watching a lot of his old videos and ran across a new article in a guitar mag on him. Lot's of interesting stuff he did to develop his guitar tone. Been giving me some ideas.

I'm still loking for a patch that sounds like Slash's guitar tone in that recent VW comercial. Anybody got one ?

You have to BUY a VW for that sound...it's all in the car ya know *rofl*
  • I'm not so sure about that. It kind of reminds of an old Pignose amp. Kind of like a speaker cone that's blown. Anybody know what I'm talking about? This one has me stumped. I'm just not sure if it can be modeled with the GNX4. I have software on my computer that will process a clean guitar into this kind of sound but it's not practical for day to day playing.

Anybody got an idea on this one ? I'm not quite ready to give up. :)
  • i have a patch for slash but it's for GNX3000, sorry
  • Can you post a sound clip ? I'd like to hear it.

I would but my GNX3K isn't available at the moment, it will be soon though, i will tell you when i have posted a sound clip.
  • We have patches named after Gilmour, Pantera, Green Day, and many more - no reason not to add a Dr. Mike patch to the collection!
  • Cool !

...to both of the last two posts ! :)
  • where do I get x-edit 1,3 ?
The version I get in the download section is 1.21.
I can't get Dr Mike's patches to work

I agree with you there iliace. I do appreciate it also Dr. Mike when you give a full description about the patches's uses such as \"Should be played in stompbox mode etc.

Thanks again Dr. Mike and for all who contribute.

    :D
  • heard and like the sound of it too. How can I possibly get the patch converted into gnx3?
  • Does anyone have anything even close to this in GNX3000 format? I attempted to convert it from the utilities, but due to the GNX4's lack of detail in the xml file it's a stab in the dark.
  • Does anyone know how to convert Dr. Mikes patches to GNX3? Every time I try I get the error message \"element is an invalid node type\" and on some patches I get the message \"invalid file format\" even if the file extension is g3p.
