Help choosing a pre amp

Im very happy with what im getting on guitar and drums from the gnx4, but it seems to be lacking a little on bass and vocals. I noticed that some pre amps had settings for bass both and vox both and thought this might be a good solution, rather than going with a BP and Vx b/c i really dont need all those efx. (Also Ive spent so much putting a DAW together that if i dont go cheap my wife might end up taking it all in a divorce).
I love the idea of putting a tube in the chain to warm things up some, may even benefit the gnxs guitar tone, so i thought this one by ART looked cool.

But im already a happy M-Audio customer, and really like the lifetime warranty on this and most of their products, so this was another choice

(bummer no tube though, would this be any better than the gnxs buit in mic pre?)

I have no experience with pre amps so any advice would be much appreciated, especially if theres a better one for the $

  • Look at the \"close to a BBE\" post. The EX2200 is an incredible unit for many GNX applications, especially bass enhancement which a Tube pre is not going to do much there. There are only a handful of Tube pre's I like for warming sounds. Presonus and Avalon. Be sure that's what you need. If you only need to warm voc's, then a Tube Pre will help. If you want to Enhance anything GNX or otherwise, spend 40 bucks on an EX2200 Closeout...they're going fast!!

Stay away from the ART unit. I never liked them since they are noisy. You'll get more from the Maudio one you have listed.
  • thanks for the tip, sounds great. I just ordered it and since it was so cheap i got a behringer mic200 tube pre to go with it. Hopefully between the two there will be some life breathed into those bass and vox tracks.
I have another question Mike, if you return to this post that is.
On the MFX Cds, im debating between #2 or #3, is there a complete listing of all the cds contents anywhere? Id like to compare the two before i decide.
    cheers
