want to buy, but have questions

Hello, I am looking at buying a Gnx4, but I have a few questions. I am used to a classic sound, but i am selling all of my fulltone/keeley pedals to save money for getting married and moving. I am wondering if the gnx4 will be an adequate replacement for a vintage sound. I understand it will not be dead-on, but can you get it to sound good. I have been reading reviews online, but these are no help because they are so varied. In general, I get the impression that if you put in the time tweaking it, you can get any sound want. Is this true? And how much time? Is it months of tweaking before i can accurately replicate a tubescreamer on a vintage Fender Twin, or just a week? Also, I played around on one today in GuitarCenter and noticed that when switching between presets the volume would dramatically increase or decrease. Is there a way to fix this? Also, how does this compare to a Podxt live or a Boss Gt-8? I know this is a digitech specific website, but perhaps an unbiased reply will come up?!

In short, Anything that anyone could tell me - pros or cons- would be very valuable, specifically about $500 worth. Thanks

  • <div style="displaynone">fiogf49gjkf0d</div>Well; I don't suppose I'm totally unbiased, since I do own a GNX4...but I can tell you that while a bit complex, even cumbersome at times, a GNX4 is an INSANELY versatile and capable piece of gear. And I don't even own Mike's SuperModels (www.mtprosound.com) CDs (YET), which I hear take the GNX to a whole new level of incredible sound. good luck-
  • Best advice I can give you is to listen to some of the music posts...
Classic Rock, Jazz, Metal, Country, all done with the GNX4.. Probably find something you like...
    IMHO:
Great piece of equipment with recording capabilites as well.
I've enjoyed the hello out of mine....
  • Thanks for the info! I appreciate it. If nothing else, it looks like I would join a very friendly, helpful online community!
  • maybe it's not the answer you're looking for but the tweaking never stops. by this i mean you will probably keep playing with the unit even when you have found your sounds.

i started by creating a direct patch, ie i removed all amp sims and effects so that the sound was as direct as could be. from here i added first amp sims, gain to get the general sound i wanted then added other effects as needed for particular songs.

i've had my gnx1 now for about 6 months and i still regularly sit down and create new amps and playing with sounds. the gnx1 is, i would say, incredibly versatile (so the gnx4 more so probably). i think yes, you will get any sound out of it that you're looking for - and with the warp feature more than you can imagine.

as to patches being of different volumes - yes, it can be a pain. i don't know why there can't be some kind of automatic volume controller which sets a basic volume then you just override it as you please. basically you need to jam with a band and continually adjust the volumes until the suit each song. once set, they should be fine but it takes a lot of time and kinda annoys the others in the band for a while.

still, i'm still hooked on my gnx1 and would only be willing to change it for a gnx3000 or gnx4.
