Adjusting YOUR pickups to the GNX processor

This is something I stumbled on years ago with my ValveFX processor.

Set your pickup height to the recommended height first, if you can tune smoothly with the GNX built in tuner your Golden, but, sometimes if your tuning is still real erratic (meaning the arrows jump all over the place) LOWER your pickups a 16th at a time evenly bass and treble until tuning becomes smooth and accurate.

You should notice better tone when you play thru the GNX after you do this

  • Thanks for the tip. Some time ago,I bought a cheaper Jackson and have had a hard time tuning my Low E and A on the GnX tuner, bounces around like you said.I'll give it a try and see what happens. A 16th,would that be about a full turn of the screw?
  • As much as I agree that this will work, is it really a problem with the guitar or the GNX?

By lowering the pickup, you are (in a sense) lowering the pickup's ability to read the note. This will defintely help with the tuning, and may very well help with the sound out of the GNX. But is it really a limitation of the GNX? My 10+ yr old digital tuner has no problem with the guitar.

Maybe there should be an input setting (or an automatic setting) that would elminate the need to adjust guitars.

Even though I use the GNX for home recording, I don't always use it while playing live. So, the thought of changing my guitar setup to compensate for the GNX is daunting.

I always set up guitars with the recommended pickup height for the individual pickup. I have to believe that the pickup manufacturer recommendations hold more water than any processor recommendation.

So, as a caveat, it should be mentioned to do this if you always use the GNX. If you use other configurations, you may want to think twice.
  • the manufacturers suggested height adjustment is just that sugestion aloyt of other things go into account after that like the GNX
