Show Me Your Play Areas, Please!
Hello!
Guys, I'm thinking of building a new work/play/record/tweak, etc area and am looking for some solid ideas.
Basically I've not decided on what to use material-wise. All I know is the area I'm using right now is not suiting my needs.
I do know this though... Sitting in an office-type chair is no good for tweaking with the computer. The arms of the chair get in the way.
I'm leaning towards an area that I can stand up at or near for playing and recording and tweaking and then probably using a stool to sit down for all the other stuff I use my computer for besides playing the guitar. You know... reading email, burning cd/dvd's and what have you. We all use our computer gear for more than guitar work, right?
I would really appreciate some feedback, some photos if you are really happy with your work area. Even if you are not happy with what you have if you could explain why you don't like your setup and what you would do to change it. I think that would be helpful.
Thanks In Advance,
Mum.

A bench works good if your constantly fiddling with stuff at foot level. I have one of them cheap fold up keyboard benches that is light and can easily be put outta the way. If you don't step on your pedals a lot, bringing them up to a higher level might make it easier to tweak them.
The stool might be a good idea because it will bring the height of your desktop up allowing for shelving underneath, one idea here is a pullout tray that holds a midi controller keyboard. I prefer a chair with armrests though cause i always find myself kicked back with my feet up on the desk distracted by the internet instead of being creatively productive.
That pressboard with laminate covering is great for making shelves and a desk with, and is fairly cheap.
One thing i like about my setup is that switchboard that sits under the monitor. One switch turns on the GNX4, another turns on the powered monitors, another for the midi keyboard, another for the amp etc..
The biggest thing for me is quick access to an instrument when i have an idea. So everything is within arms reach. My favourite guitar sits to my left, my midi keyboard to my right( a pull out tray under the desk would free up a lot of space for me here ) and a microphone stand next to that.
A swivel chair with wheels on it is beneficial for me cause i just push back grab the guitar and hit record, or swivel to the right and work with the keyboard.
On the wall to my right I will hang my guitars with the Hercules wall hangers, I use them now an love 'em. Behing me and away from the wall I will put my Yamaha DTX drums facing the workstation so I can visualize levels etc on my monitor while I am recording.
I am also thinking about going wireless on my guitars to get rid of that damn cord that is ALWAYS in the way. Not sure how well this will work for recording purposes but I think I will give it a shot. Anyone else doing this?
Anyway, I have to survive the construction process first and then actually make the time to actually play the guitar.
Thanks for the reply. The desk looks like a good idea. I never thought of the desk itself being adjustable.
If I can make a suggestion about going wireless. Don't waste your money. We were using wireless gear for the guitars for a few years but there is a major loss of sound quality. It's always better to be hard wired especially if you are recording. The stuff wasn't cheap either. And I suppose there are always improvements but still... I'm sure someone will disagree with me on this but you'll always get better sound wired.
One interesting idea I saw was one of those Pedestal Mixing racks. The guy took that and added a 19.25\" Shelving board. He mounts the GNX or any other device to that. It's adjustable height and angles so he can work sitting down or standing up.
I use the GNX on the desk with the GNXFC on the floor. Editing and processing tones for live use. One of the reasons being that using the Menu structure keeps me active in adjusting things that way. too much of the Editor and you forget the basic menu functions and programming. On my HR Desk, I added a second KB pullout shelf like you have on PC desks. I am thinking of customizing a third for the XBoard 49 Controller and MIDI stuff.
Here is a better link and pictures of the Balt. This thing is awesome. My pedal will fit right under there, too. http://www.officeergonomix.com/default.tpl?action=full&cart=1107426741127905&--eqskudatarq=03-011-05XX#
