Input output recording Lag on USB

<div style="displaynone">fiogf49gjkf0d</div>I'm getting a lag effect whilst recording via usb.?
I didn't notice it on the first few tracks but now i have 8 or 9 tracks and it's impossible to play in time ??
The playback sounds direct and my playing is on the money (i've tested it on a click track) but when i finish the take ... the recorded signal is not getting to the hard disk on time ?? It got worse as the tracks grew.
Is it a USB problem or my sound card or maybe my hard drive ??
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
P.S. i'm plugging the GNX3K into my 1.5GHZ laptop (500meg RAM)and recording on Sonar ...if that helps ?
Also noticed the popping and crackling getting worse as well.?

  • If you monitor from the GNX3K you will not get latency. Set Sonar audio outs to Digitech usb 1/2. Now the GNX3K will act as your sound card. Plug your computer speakers or headphones into the headphone jack of the GNX3K. If you have studio monitors, hook them up to the xlr outs. You can then monitor your recording session without latency. Trust me, this is the way to go.

All input and output via the USB lead and just headphones out of the GNX. Maybe my outputs from sonar weren't set correctly? I'll check that. I had several busses running and can't remember the exact setup.
Many thanks for the help though. Always appreciated.
  • Are you playing back all 8 tracks as you record another take? Did you try muting or turning off the track outputs on tracks that you don't need to hear while recording another track? I'm just throwing around ideas but have no idea if they will help. Could be worth a shot!
  • try not using the gnx for monitoring the tracks being sent from computer to amp could be taking up all the bandwidth. also you could just blend to tracks together
  • <div style="displaynone">fiogf49gjkf0d</div>Yeah ..silly me ... i think that might be it ... i was running everything back at once and when i checked.... i had effects running on drums (reverb & sonic max) and reverb on two guitar tracks etc. etc. I think i was trying to create a live feel to record the lead break, but asking too much from my hardware ? i never looked at the cpu and disk percentages, but i bet they were workin overtime.?
Thanks ne1 and lespaul. I did shift the lead break 1 or 2 ticks forward (thanks for the tip) and it blended beautifully. )
I also noticed a heap more crackling and popping during the lagging takes and when i finally turned everything off and played it back .. the cracking and popping wasn't actually recorded.?? Just a bit of a bummer to hear while you're trying to create something. Do you guys have any idea about optimum settings for read caching and write caching and buffer sizes and dither settings ? i wonder if those settings might be tweaked to get a more user friendly hardware setup ??
    Thanks again.
