Just wondering if anybody else out there digs on Zappa. Saw him live twice. Once with the mothers and once with the Chunga's Revenge group. Can honestly say I have rarely seen such musicanship...

Tinseltown Rebellion (1981) -Guitarist Steve Vai replaced Adrian Belew at about this point, and continued to appear regularly into the mid-80s.

Vai being a composer, you can hear ALOT of Zappa in his tunes.

I met Mr. Zappa years ago in a bar after a local show. 70-ish. He performed with a cast on his leg and was quite brilliant. I bought him a beer and we talked a bit. Very, very down to earth man.
I'm sure everyone knows that this is where Steve Vai got his big break, first transcribing Franks music, then playing with him. Frank was a fantastic composer. Has anyone heard his symphonic works?

Great serious composer who also beleived that humor in music was cool.

I tend to agree and I have to confess I am a great fan of PDQ Bach. You know, Peter Schikles creation of J.S. Bachs one legged step brother who couldn't dance very well...

I also enjoy the music of John Cage. A very talented composer which a lot of people take seriously but I honestly think he likes to poke fun at the public just a little bit.

Especially Mr. Cages piece and I forget the exact title, but I beleive it's \"5:02\" or something along that line. The premise is that Mr. Cage comes out on stage in full tux, introduces the piece and then sits quietly for 5 minutes and 2 seconds.

He also did several pieces that I believe he called \"DeTuned Piano\" or something like that.. Getting Old..... They say memories the second thing to go and I can't remember the first... Mr Cage's piano is tuned with erasers, paper clips, bells, etc... on the strings...

Pretty ballsy,
I don't believe I have the guts to attempt those stunts live, but he did.

Long live the musical humorists. They remind us all not to take ourselves so seriously and to have fun...

Recently, Mr. Cage's publishers sued some band for using the 5:03 piece. The band used an excessive bit of silence on a song, which met the requirements for copyright infringement. They won, and the bit was removed from subsequent pressings. You gotta love that.
