No X-edit version 2

Hi people, just thought I would let you know that there is no plans for an X-edit version 2
I contacted support and the replied with no plans for X-edit versions, I have since emailed them back and mentioned that there has to be with the amount of bugs..
Everyone should email them
Come on, lets get some of these bugs sorted out
Zak

  • What bugs are you experiencing?
  • Typical bugs are as follows
Expression pedal collapses X-edit when moved in edit mode
Dont turn off you GNX4 before shutting down X-edit or it crashes
USB drivers drop out from time to time
Cant open patches by dragging and dropping, I know this isnt a bug but just about program invented can do this
Slows down dramatically after opening 6 or 7 patches and moving between patch numbers (typically if you leave it open and come back to it)

FYI, I am well aware of the problem with the amount of data vs midi for the expression pedal so surely they could put a option in there to reduce data while in edit mode or lock it, How do you try a patch with it open if it crashes?

Very small list but definate bugs
I would really be interested in getting these fix but more importantly seeing some upgrade as mentioned in my earlier email about Xedit v2
    Regards
    Zak
  • I agree with you Zak. I myself experience some of the bugs you described (EXP pedal, app slowdown) and I must admit that I'm really disappointed they're not planning new version - it's a shame on one hand. Such a wonderful piece of gear deserves adequate PC suppor, IMO.
  • This is mostly a repeat and/or compilation of suggestions and bugs from others and myself.

    X-Edit Bugs:
    1. Using the expression pedal causes data corruption in X-Edit and becomes most of the time becomes unusable. This issue was partly mitigated with X-Edit 1.21 and firmware v 1.3 but still remains.
    2. Slowness when opening many presets, even if the editing window for that preset is closed. Windows xp reports heavy memory usage (200MB+ for opening 20+ presets and doesn't decrease when closing the editing windows. Only a restart of X-Edit allieviates the problem.
    3. When opening a preset if the cursor happens to lie in one of the virtual knobs, the value will get changed to the cursor position. For example opening a preset that has a red channel level of 60, if the cursor lies on the virtual knob indicating a value of 99 when the window is just being displayed will change the level value to 99. Note that the mouse is not being clicked, just the cursor is positioned there. This happens with X-Edit 1.3 (the version included with the GNX3000) using it with the GNX4. Not sure about 1.21, but probably the same story.
      [/list:o]

      X-Edit Request for enhancements:
      1. Drag and Droping presets from the OS to the X-Edit application.
      2. Drag and drop within the tree structure presented in X-Edit.
      3. Drag and drop with swap using the tree structure in X-Edit. Swap mean s that if I drag patch #5 onto patch #15, that #15 now contains #5 and #5 contains the old #15.
      4. Reordering of patches. Make it easy to reorder the 80 patches.
      5. If possible, allow chaning the bank names from X-Edit (Note for users: hardware might not allow it).
      6. Allow X-Edit to run without the device hooked on.
      7. Allow management of 80 presets easily, so we can have sets of 80 (or whatever the limit is for the particular device) to load easily instead of one by one.
      8. Allow uploading multiple patches onto the GNX4 withouth opening an editing window for each.
      9. GNX4 only: allow the compact flash patches to be managed offline with X-Edit or a separate utility.
        [/list:o]

        USB Drivers bugs:
        1. The USB drivers are not loaded properly when chaning the USB port used when installing the drivers.

          [/list:o]
IF any of these features are not being worked on, then here's a very big request: RELEASE the code for us the users to modify. Make the licensing so that it can be distributed but not sold.

Maybe this is related to this issue:

  • I've mailed support with reference to this post. If many of us do this, perhaps we'll succeed in getting thes bugs and ehancements fixed? Let's try!
  • Since Digitech gains no money from upgrading Xedit I think it is a lost cause.
  • It's true that we have no formal plans for X-Edit 2.0. However, that doesn't mean that there won't be any upgrades. We have every intention of addressing known bugs in future releases. Actually, we're getting close to releasing a 1.31 upgrade that will fix some MIDI issues. One of us will post to the Sound Community when its available.

A 2.0 release would be a major upgrade, not a handful of bug fixes. If I have any say in it, we will also do a 2.0 release at some point. Of course we have a lot of stuff going on here right now, and limited resources, so its not a major priority currently.
  • Thank you Josh, for your comments! They are appreciated...

It's good to know that some bugs are going to be fixed.

As I suspected, major enhancements are low priority (as to be expected), since you guys are probably working on future products (GNX5? GNX4000? pedals? )
  • Ok, who's gonna be first in line to take a nice lil bite of some crow?

    I nominate Zak. :)

<-- passes Zak some salt. :P
  • Looks like a new version is just around the corner. Here's todays correspondance with digitech support:

    Me:
As a GNX4 owner, I'm looking forward to a new version of the very useful software X-edit. For a list of bugs and requested enhancements, please refer to http://www.guitarworkstation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=408

    Digitech:
Thanks for your interest. The latest version of X-Edit was just posted at www.digitech.com.

    Me:
Thanks for the reply. As far as I can see, thats mac, unless I'm missing something. I'm an xp user. Anything for me?

    Digitech:
It looks like a beta version for PC has not yet been posted.
  • Thats right. We posted the Mac version because many Mac users have been asking for the ability to load the XML presets from the sound community. We'll *probably* have a PC version in a week or two.
  • I do have the MAC version that engineering sent me. I now have a working copy of X-Edit. Prior to Tuesday I did not. FYI for the MAC it is version 1.5 and my copy is pre release. For reference my X-Edit would just not load :(

Thanks to the team for the effort
    John
  • Hey I would love to take my words back unfortunately the stubborn side of me wont, mainly because the information I posted was straight from an email from Digitech support

However I am glad about two things
    1. Finally someone from DFigitech is talking to us, thanks for this. I understand they can not read everything but perhaps we could ask admin and they can filter requests and have a good contact to get some straight answers (Just a thought)
    2. An Upgarde, awesome but thats no what I was told, Yes I am pleased  Squeaky wheel syndrome, If we dont say what we want, we will never get

    So to Digitech, Thanks
To GNX Jammer, Zak passed back both the Salt and The Crow (maybe another time) :D

A slightly happier Zak but bring on the GNX5 with all the items Alberta mentioned and more MORE MORE
    Moooawahahaha
    Zak
  • Guys, you have to admit, Digitech does a lot for it's users. I see it didn't take too long for them to get a newer version created given all the bugs everyone's experiencing, including myself. It's a beta version but that gives us all the opportunity to express it's good points and bad so they can get a general release version out asap. It's good to know that Digitech stands behind us.

I consume them frequently enough that I have my own lifetime supply. Go ahead and hang onto these. We all need to have them handy every now and then.

    :P

Words I live by, though our methods of obtaining what we want may be slightly different.

    That's a great idea AA!
  • The workaround to use the \"Windows Classic\" theme described at the link Albert posted above fixed the slow-down / memory leak problem for me. That one is Windows, not X-Edit.
