The two worst things have happened

Yesterday the worst thing happened and I'm paying the price. I was playing some pickup hockey with some buddies and one of them let a slapshot go and I tried to be a goalie for a second and the puck whacked my thumb so hard it swelled up the size of a golfball. Broke my thumbnail and looks like a small version of Barny the dinosaur.

So now now guitar and no hockey for me this is killing me (not to mention the pain I'm in). My son who plays Atom A had a good laugh when I got home. So I have to wonder has anybody else had an injury that prevented them from playing temporarily and besides beer and sex how did you cope?:cry::cry:

  • Firstly, I gotta say my winter bound commrade that is a sad yet funny story. I'll get to the sharing injury part later, but for now i have to tell youthe funniest part of your thread to me was hearing the words \"pickup hockey\" and \"atom\". Living in Texas now i have only heard those words twice in the last 10 years, \"pickup hockey\" since i recently discoverd \"Trailer Park Boys\" and once more where you mention it here. Homesick maybe? doubt it don't really miss the winter. :)
    Injuries now.....
I recently went to a rock climbing gym and couldn't play for a week! my hands were seriously tweaked!
i guess if you did it all the time it would probably be good strength training or somthing for playing faster, but for me it was a big bummer.
Anybody rock climb here? if you do i bet you are either lighting fast or slow as drying doo!
hope yer feeling well soon
  • Sorry to hear that. When I had a hand injury, I couldn't stay away from my guitar so I learned how to tap with my right hand and played with my guitar sitting flat on my lap. It was fun, but not something that I retained. Maybe it's a good time for you to learn something new like all the things the GNX or Pro Tracks can do. :D

Rehearsing, 2 weeks before a gig.
    I have a Bahringer 2442 mixer (obviosly a very dangerous model :D )
Anyway, I was putting my gear together, when my thumb nail ( on the pick hand) got stucked in the mixer chassis. At first I thought I cut myself on a sharp edge, then I saw 2/3 of my thumb nail pointing out of the back of mixer. Looked at my thumb; 1/3 nail and 2/3 flesh.
Wrapped my thumb in a LOT of surgery tape.
The rehearsal... Let's put it this way, Hit strings with the pick was OK, but once in a while I accidentaly hit the string w my thumb... ouch.
After the rehersal the surgery tape was filled with blood and so was the strings.

    Hmmm, 2 options:
    1) Convert to play left
    2) skip rehearsing until the gig soundcheck.
    I went for #2...

(b.t.w the Gig went really well)
  • Gosh!!! This list is endless.

There was the time my drummer took me to my pad after finishing a gig and I was so pumped up I kept my hand on the top of his car door while we were rapping about the nights tunes and he let his foot off the clutch pinching my thumb between the car door and an oak tree in my driveway.

There was the time the Banditos motor cycle club showed up at a gig, en force, and all hell broke loose.

There was the \"Rotten Red's Castaway Club\" gig where I was the only guy in the band not on parole and the bandstand was litereally enclosed in chicken wire. Shades of Jake and Elmo.

And finally, there were the two fine chicks me and my buddy \"Guitar Tom\" picked up and took them home after the gig. As we pulled up to their pad we discovered a guy butt naked in the front yard holding a butcher knife while masturbating and screaming \"But I am God!!!!\" We split in a hurry.

No wonder I got out of the club scene. Beleive me, I could go on and on with the weird stuff I went through, but I don't want to bore you.

    See ya,
and sorry to sound like an old fuddy duddy reminiscing about the old days.

  • That sux bro, ice ice ice.
  • to tal.....
LMAO....how the heck can he be playing and holdin a knife....a simple distraction and he'll be cutting hotdogs!

    about the injuries.....
concerning my hand....well it's just bout twice with the left hand..
1-i broke my wrist in soccer, with platter and all this junk, from bout a year....i couldn't play for 3months!

2-last week i just practiced fro 8 hs straight up without stop... so i pulled my thumb's muscle...andubntil now i can't play!!! and it sucks! BIG TIME
  • I think I have you all beat. I was a lefty player until 1991 when I ran my left hand thru a Radial arm saw on a construction job and cut off my index and middle finger. Didn't play again til a couple years ago and now I play right handed.

Whoa what a legend, i couldnt imagine myself playing left handed well at least not fast anyway.
  • Tal, LOL!

    SydeKiK, WOW!

    ...

    Lots of interesting stories here.
I broke my shoulder on january 1st this year. But as far as I remember I didn't miss a band practice ;) Well it was a bit hard to move from 1st fret to 12th fret fast enough but that couldn't stop me playing... I even played without sitting down until the other band members forced me to (\"Man, don't put that much weight on your shoulder! We want you to PLAY!\") ;)
