px are for active speakers or can connect to power ampifier?

edited August 2008 in DriveRack PX
hello,i am new to this forum,i have some questions for the px unit,i want to buy it but i have 8 passive speakers connected to 2 power amplifiers , with a mixer unit.no sub speakers...

first can i use the subwoofer output to drive a power amplifier which drives 4 full-range passive speakers,if equalise the high pass filter( the manual writes Adjusts the frequency of the High Pass filter from OUT (below 20Hz) to 20KHz),in other words make the sub output a normal output, covers all the bandwith range for full-range use,

second one person which know these dbx px units tell that if i connect the px to 2 stereo power amplifiers, and make the sub out for full-range use(how i do this?)
then the unit is available to drive two power amplifiers for full-range use with passive speakers.

  • the specifications in the manual of px
    ANALOG OUTPUTS:
Number of Outputs: 2 (Stereo) Line outputs
2 Sub outputs (mono or stereo)
Connectors: 2 Male XLR XLR line outputs

    2 Male XLR Sub outputs
    Type: Electronically balanced, RF filtered
    Impedance: 120 Ω
    Max Output Level: +20dBu

this impedance and Max Output Level is equal with the pa unit which can drive power amplifiers
    6
    Connectors:

    Male XLR
    Type:

    Electronically balanced, RF filtered
    Impedance:120ohm
    Max Output Level: +20dBu
  • then with these specifications why cannot drive the px power amplifiers ,
and is only for active speakers?
  • No problem running \"full range\" from the sub outs. The PX will work just fine. Generally speaking, an amp is an amp, whether it is in the speaker cabinet and in an amp rack. So, no worries.

What is your typical set-up and for what purpose do you set up your 8 speakers for?

  • thanks my friend for your reply ,i have a Numark 5000FX mixer unit with pioneer cdj-200 cd players,8 custom made pro speakers with b&c drivers, eminence and beyma drivers with custom passive crossover,2 ecler power amplifiers 2 x 750w rms 4ohm.the system is for parties and for personal use.
  • I was asking, because with that number of cabs I thought maybe you did the \"theatre in the park\" kind of stuff and had speakers all over the place. If that had been the case then the limited delay of the PX could be a problem. Carry on.

    DRA
  • Actually as I see it the PX has no delay at all...But the xover/filter section seems to work the same as the DRPA (as far as I can tell without ever seeing one) So, you could (as Dra said) drive either a power amp IN a speaker or OUT...

  • Technically, \"No Delay\" is \"Limited\".

  • thank you guys for your advice
  • had the same wonder, cause my english is not so good, i bought the driverack px,and i was thinking powered speakers is the active speakers :? lol.But when i used dictionary i show is the excactly difference. I use it now with a crown amplifier (xls-602) and 4 electrovoice sx-100 and no problem. Is that correct or maybe i have problem in the future? Thanks from someone newbie.
  • No, there's not a problem... the PX will work just fine with powered speakers or with amps and passive speakers...you could even bi-amp a couple speakers...just not bi-amp with subs.
